Chinese Perfume Tree Care: Growing Chinese Perfume Trees

By: Teo Spengler

Chinese perfume tree (Aglaia odorata) is a small evergreen tree in the mahogany family. It is an ornamental plant in American gardens, typically growing to 10 feet (3 m.) or under and producing intensely fragrant sprays of unusual yellow flowers. If you want to start growing Chinese perfume trees, read on for information on these lovely plants and for tips on Chinese perfume tree care.

Chinese Perfume Tree Facts

Chinese perfume trees, also called Aglaia odorata plants, are native to low regions of China. They also grow in Taiwan, Indonesia, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam. The plant’s genus name comes from Greek mythology. Aglaia was the name of one of the three Graces.

In the wild, Aglaia ordorata plants can grow to 20 feet (6 m.) high. They grow in thickets or sparse forests. In the United States, they grow only in cultivation and are often planted for their fragrant blossoms.

You’ll find some interesting Chinese perfume tree facts when you read about those blossoms. The tiny yellow flowers—each about the size and shape of a grain of rice—grow in panicles about 2 to 4 inches (5-10 m.) long. They are shaped like tiny balls but do not open when the flowers bloom.

The scent exuded by Chinese perfume tree flowers is sweet and lemony. It is stronger during the day than at night.

Growing Chinese Perfume Trees

If you are growing Chinese perfume trees, you need to know that an individual tree will bear either male or female flowers. Both types of flowers are fragrant, but only a pollinated female flower produces the fruit, a small berry with one seed inside.

Chinese perfume tree care begins with planting the tree in an appropriate location. The trees are only hardy in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 10 through 11. In cooler regions, you can grow Aglaia odorata plants in containers and move them indoors when temperatures drop.

The trees will need well-draining soil and a location with full or partial sun. Plant them in a location with some shade if your region is hot in the summer.

Container plants brought inside should be located next to sunny windows. They’ll need moderate but regular irrigation. The soil must dry out between watering times.

1) AO is indeed very easy to please. It's one of the least fussy plants I've ever owned. It's a very well-behaved and gentlemanly shrub. Not like my night-blooming jasmine, which is a total drama queen.

2) AO does fine outdoors in full sun during the summer or inside as a houseplant during the winter with very little sun (in Seattle, no less!).

3) When in bloom, it's scent is very subtle, but *fantastic.* It smells the strongest in the morning. I can't think of anything that smells better than my AO. It blooms about every three months or so year round, and the blooms last for a few weeks.

4) It grows very slowly: I've learned this means I have to be careful when transitioning it from inside during the winter to outside in the summer--it took a full month for it to properly harden and adapt to the UV rays so it could stand a full day of sun without getting scorched. be careful!

5) It laughs off the infernal spider mites that perpetually plague my other houseplants, yet AO's weakness seems to be that it's prone to rust. Not a big deal, though.

Last summer I was for my holidays in Hong Kong and I bought a Aglaia Odorata.

On the day I left, I bought the plant, stripped of all the soil and the roots wrapped in damp cotton wool.

Then packed into a 1.5 Coke PET bottle.

When I arrived home I potted plant with Akadama soil.

Now 3 months later I finally see something of a growth . ie flowering ..

My father was also a lover of this plant, he used just earth, but the problem was of course the drainage of the plant.

It is for me the first time I used this Akadama soil.

- Although it flowers at least twice a year, I've never had flowers with any scent. It's not just me--no one can smell any fragrance either directly or indirectly from it. There is and never has been any scent. Changing fertilization types and schedules does nothing.

- Although a pretty little plant, it drips sap, making lower leaves and everything around it sticky and hard to clearn.

Chinese perfume tree makes scents

Thursday

Start the year with something new — the Chinese perfume tree, a multi-purpose, adaptable plant that can be used as a houseplant, hedge, foundation plant, patio tree and bonsai subject. Chinese perfume tree, also known as Chinese rice flower and mock lemon, has an upright growth habit and a slow-to-moderate growth rate. It’s incomprehensible why this plant, which is nearing threatened status in its native China, isn’t grown more in warm-climate gardens. Although the aromatic yellow flowers are individually tiny, they’re often produced in such abundance that they’re quite ornamental.

Chinese perfume tree (Aglaia odorata) is an ideal houseplant for a corner that receives bright, indirect light or a spot flooded with full sun. Outdoors, this species, hardy to the upper 20s and moderately drought tolerant, grows on well-drained sites and in any light conditions except deep shade. Although Chinese perfume tree can grow over 15 feet tall outdoors, occasional pruning will keep it any height desired. Propagate with warm-season cuttings. Plants are available online.

Whether they’re cultivated in beds, in containers or here-and-there in the garden, nothing matches the color annual plants provide. Among cool-season annuals to install now are petunia, calendula, snapdragon, digitalis, pansy, alyssum, dianthus, statice, delphinium, baby’s breath, sweet William, dusty miller and browalia. Growing annuals in containers gives gardeners the option of shifting plants to wherever color is desired. They can adorn the front entryway one week and the back deck the next. All the plants listed require at least part-day sun to thrive.

A family of pesticides called neonics has, according to researchers both abroad and in the U.S., been firmly linked to the colony collapse disorder of honeybees. The chemicals, also responsible for killing other beneficial insects including butterflies and ladybugs, are widely used on major crops, even though most depend on pollination by bees. In fact, 70 percent of America’s crops are pollinated by bees.

Among the best plants for windowsill cultivation are Adromischus, a group of 28 or so small succulents from South Africa. Related to jade plants, several species of Adromischus have perched on sills for generations, while others are becoming increasingly popular. Two old favorites are plover eggs (A. cooperi) and calico hearts (A. triflorus), which have similar wedge-shaped, fleshy leaves decorated with reddish markings. Both are low-growing, slowly clumping plants.

My favorite Adromischus, despite its lack of bright color, is A. cristatus, available in a range of varieties. This small plant gradually develops stems several inches long that generate adventitious roots along their length. As the roots age, they turn reddish-brown and form a thin shag. Another Adromischus — one that’s dazzling rather than simply charming — is A. marianiae, with rough-textured leaves in a remarkable array of colors and shapes. Adromischus are available online.
