If the seller in every possible way hides and does not show samples of frames, there is a high probability that a low-quality product will be sold to you.

When choosing a frame, also pay attention to the following points:

The presence of a light stabilizing layer

High-quality cellular polycarbonate has excellent selective light transmission characteristics. It almost completely absorbs ultraviolet radiation with a wavelength of 400 nm or less, which is the most dangerous for plants and transmits the rays of the visible and infrared ranges to the maximum. This contributes to the creation of a greenhouse effect.

To protect cellular polycarbonate from the destructive effects of ultraviolet radiation, a layer of light-stabilizing substance is applied to its outer surface by coextrusion.

You can find out about the presence of such a protective coating by the corresponding inscriptions on the protective film glued to the polycarbonate sheet. You need to be careful here.

If there are no special marks on the protective film, it means that they are designed for indoor use.

An attempt to use such materials for the manufacture of a greenhouse will lead to premature failure of the coating.

One of the most important properties of polycarbonate is the ability to maintain its technical characteristics throughout the entire service life of the panels. Some manufacturers claim that UV protection is in the bulk of the material.

In fact, it is not enough and it is intended only to prevent the destruction of the material during storage.

Cellular polycarbonate thickness

When choosing cellular polycarbonate for the construction of greenhouses, the thickness of the sheet is of decisive importance. The specified parameter directly determines such properties of panels as the coefficient of light transmission, the level of thermal conductivity and the ability to withstand mechanical stress. For the construction of greenhouses, sheets with a thickness of 4 to 10 mm are usually used, which are most suitable in terms of basic parameters.

The thickness of the sheet is determined based on the structural features of the frame; an increase in this parameter contributes to an increase in resistance to wind and snow load. In some cases, different panels can be used on the same structure.

For flat and arched roofs, thicker sheets are used, and vertical walls are made of thinner panels. The most optimal is the use of cellular polycarbonate with a thickness of 4 - 6 mm. In doing so, it is necessary to make sure that the panel thickness declared by the manufacturer is the actual one. For this, the panel can be measured with a caliper.

If the declared and actual thickness of the polycarbonate sheet does not match, the use of such material should be discarded.

Under no circumstances agree to buy polycarbonate with a thickness of 3.5 - 3.7 mm. At the same time, sellers can say that this material has a higher density, so it can be used instead of sheets with a thickness of 4 mm. But most likely this is low quality polycarbonate, which has an extremely low service life.

If polycarbonate easily bends from the impact of fingers and does not have a designation on which side of it the light-stabilizing layer is located, then this is a cheap material that has a service life of no more than 2 years.

In the process of choosing cellular polycarbonate for the construction of a greenhouse, special attention should be paid to the following points:

  • Compliance with the panel thickness declared by the manufacturer and indicated in the documentation and on the packaging.
  • The presence of a protective film on both sides of the sheet, which protects against their premature wear.
  • Availability of accompanying documentation for the entire batch: certificates of conformity for products and passports.

Determining the shape of the greenhouse

Arched greenhouse

An arched greenhouse is a structure with a semicircular ceiling.

The lattice girder consists of arcs spaced apart from each other with transverse connecting elements. This type of greenhouse is most widespread among the population.

The structure can be rather easily enlarged or reduced in length. This is done by adding or removing individual sections.

Arched greenhouse with lifting sides (butterfly greenhouse)

Such a structure has a rather modest size and is rather a greenhouse, its main convenience lies in the possibility of easy access to the garden bed and the organization of ventilation of the internal space if necessary.

Greenhouse with drip-shaped arch
