Onion: language of onion flowers and plants

LANGUAGE AND MEANING OF FLOWERS AND PLANTS

ONION

Allium cepa

(family

Liliaceae

)

Despite the extraordinary virtues of this plant, its symbolism is not positive.

Being a plant made up of several superimposed layers (the tunics) it has become the symbol of duplicity and falsehood probably also linked to the fact that rubbing your eyes with onions makes you cry false tears.

In the Middle Ages it had become the food of the poor who ate "bread and onion" and therefore had become a symbol of poverty and misery.
