Everything about rutaria or how to make a garden from old stumps and roots with your own hands

Nature sometimes creates very bizarre shapes. Often a lonely tree stump or dried driftwood looks amazingly picturesque, reminding us of a fabulous goblin or other mysterious creatures. The art of creating a garden from roots - rutaria - is based on these properties of dried snags, roots and stumps. It is not difficult to create a rutary with your own hands, it is enough to show imagination and turn on the imagination.

Search and preparation of materials

If you have large trees in your garden, pruning them will always leave interestingly shaped branches. If there is a huge old stump on the site - do not rush to uproot it, the stump can be so transformed that it will become the central figure in your garden.

This decorative stump is conveniently located by the road, the wood is processed and painted. The large stump area allows several types of flowering plants to be grown in the recess. Various plants are planted between the roots. Such a stump is an excellent decorative composition on the site.

Rutarius is still a new word for us, although people with creative imagination have been creating decorative compositions from roots and stumps for a long time. The word is derived from the English "root" - root.

If there are no old stumps and trees on the site, you can go to the forest or planting. Here you can always find driftwood, remains of stumps, bark and large branches, which will be useful when creating rutaria. When updating a park area or streets in the city, you can find excellent stumps, and cuts, and logs.

After the materials for creating the rutaria have been selected, it is advisable to process them. Dry wood does not belong to durable materials, rutaria from untreated wood will retain its strength and appearance for a maximum of 6-7 years. The selected components need to be washed, doused with boiling water, where required - cleaned from dust, where necessary - sawed, joined or cut off. The tree can be opened with varnish, treated with special impregnations, painted. But if the service life of 7 years suits you, it is enough to clean the tree of insects and dust and leave it in its natural form.

Rules for creating a good composition

Rutaria are created today both in apartments (mini-rutaria) and in summer cottages. The garden rutarius transforms your relaxation corner, making it mysterious and cozier, and will go well with whatever style you choose for your garden. In order for a root garden to be successful, you need to take into account some rules and know something:

  • Think about what you would like to create. Rutarius can only consist of dead parts of a tree, it looks not very happy, but mysterious. If you use a combination of driftwood, stumps and fresh flowers and plants, you can create beautiful compositions that delight the eye. Sometimes the driftwood is so reminiscent of the figurine of some animal or goblin that it is simply impossible not to finish drawing this image.
  • The advantages of rutaria are that each is unique. It is impossible to create identical gardens from driftwood, because there are no identical snags and stumps in nature.
  • You can create a rutaria anywhere - for example, by a fence or on a veranda.
  • You can create rutaria using only wood as a material, or you can use ceramics, forging elements, garden decor in the form of various figures, pebbles, artificial and natural stone. Dry wood and moss go well.

3 main types of rutaria

Rutary happens:

  • Natural. Living and non-living plants are used in rutaria of this type. This is the most beautiful and organic option that many people choose.
  • The simplest. Only driftwood and tree stumps are used here, but usually more work needs to be done on them. For example, you found a snag that looks a lot like a logger, but for a greater resemblance it needs to be cut and filed here and there, this process is similar to creating a sculpture.
  • Decorative. In rutaria of this type, both live plants and figures made of wood are used, but the latter play the main role. For example, the focus will be on a stump or driftwood of a bizarre shape, surrounded by modest plants, against which it will look more expressive. Or it will be a composition of several figures against the background of a green lawn, an ivy-covered wall, etc.

Below are illustrations of all three options.

Such a rutaria could be considered natural, but the wood is processed here in a special way - the texture is emphasized, the wood is painted, so this option is rather decorative.

But this option is practically untouched, as nature intended. For decoration, the author decided to plant flowers right in the center of the composition.

An example of a decorative rutaria. An interesting composition, in the center of which there is an inverted cultivated root surrounded by various plants

Such a rutaria can be made near a recreation area or a playground. When creating, garden decor is used in the form of a gnome figurine, a wooden barrel, stones, a stump and a wattle in the background

Where is the best place to place your masterpiece?

We offer several options to choose from:

  • At the entrance to the dacha. A stylish bright composition will make a pleasant impression, where flowering plants and roots are combined at the entrance to your site.
  • Near the recreation area. By a small pond or fountain, next to the gazebo, a composition of a garden of roots with garden decor - gnomes, bright flowers, funny animals will look good.
  • If you want to equip a mysterious corner in the garden, you can place a large root or a fancy driftwood in the far corner of the garden, surrounded by green plants. It can also be an old tree stump, from the center of which flowers grow picturesquely.

Rutarium in landscaping should ideally blend into a harmonious whole with your site and garden style.

In the far corner of the garden, you can place the figure of such a mysterious monster peeping out of the thickets. The driftwood is preserved in its natural form, the edges are slightly sawn, and a stone is used for the eye

Selection of suitable plants

In combination with living plants, the composition will look brighter and more pleasing to the eyes. Plants should not be particularly lush, with luxurious flowers, because the main emphasis is on wood figures. One of the most successful solutions is to make something like a flowerpot out of a stump or log. This is easy if the wood is rotten. It is necessary to remove the core, process the tree and cover the vacated space with earth. In such a peculiar container, fern, modest periwinkle flowers, chamomile will grow well and look. Cornflowers, phloxes, petunias and black shaves are unpretentious and will also look good in rutaria.

Ferns and ivy look spectacular against the background of dry gray wood, making the rutaria picturesque. You can use pieces of lawn, mosses, combine them with a stone. Plants in rutaria can be changed at will, this is real creativity.

In a single composition, sometimes bright flowers also look good.

The figurine of a cute goblin with glass eyes against the background of a fern is an example of the simplest rutaria. The driftwood has undergone a little processing, selected a good material for the eyes - and the composition is ready

It is very pleasant to work on the creation of a root garden, and the finished creation of your own hands will delight you even more.

If there are old stumps in your area, that's great. Do not rush to uproot them, because they can become key figures in your garden. When pruning trees, do not throw away the twigs, some of them look fabulous. All this will come in handy when arranging a rutaria with your own hands - a garden of stones.

Features and types of rutaria

More recently, a new word "rutary" has appeared in landscape design. It is used to designate a section of the garden, for the design of which various roots and driftwood were taken. The fashion for arranging such corners came from the West. Initially, we put driftwood in an alpine slide as a highlight, or used the roots of large trees when creating garden furniture as an integral part of it. And only recently, the root garden has become a full-fledged device in landscape art.

The advantage of rutaria is that it is impossible to create two identical compositions, because in nature there are no two identical stumps, snags or logs. Each of them will be unique in its own way. Let's first find out what are the corners with roots:

  • Simple rutary. In this case, a clearing is created from only driftwood and roots. But don't worry about it looking lifeless. Such a rutary looks quite original and even mysterious. But you need an "exclusive" material - the original form. It also needs some work. Wood compositions look great on lawns!
  • Natural rutaria. Such a root garden is inherently compositional. It is he who enjoys the greatest popularity, he is chosen by almost all owners of suburban real estate. This is a kind of "biomechanics" - living and nonliving. It won't take 1-2 days to create such a composition at a summer cottage, as there are many difficulties, but you will not be disappointed.
  • Decorative rutaria - cartoonish or fabulous. There are a lot of crafts, sculptures and wooden elements to be used here. And the plants will become just a background for the picture. When creating a fantasy corner, it would be good to develop a specific scenario. But chaos is definitely unacceptable here. Everything must be harmonious inside the clearing. The composition should fit into the main style of the landscape.

A corner with roots, logs and snags does not fit all the style solutions of the personal plot. In a garden that is decorated in a regular style, with ordered elements and strict geometric shapes, rutaria will be out of place. A French, Italian garden or baroque plot will look ridiculous when surrounded by disordered driftwood. But few choose the classics of the genre, but equip the plot in a mixed style.

Layout of the rock garden

So the work of laying out a root garden begins with the design of the composition. To do this, use our recommendations:

  1. Collect your thoughts and clearly imagine what your corner will look like.
  2. It is advisable to create a sketch on paper. It is recommended to start drawing from the center of the composition. For example, from a large stone or stump. Then all the components and small stones are depicted. The shape of a driftwood can be rendered approximately, because it is difficult to draw all its bends. More important is the location of snags and branches in the composition and their direction.
  3. It is ideal if your rutary is combined in theme, color or shape with the landscape design and the design of other elements of your infield - a swing, fence or bench.
  4. Plants are depicted last on the sketch. Consider their exactingness, growth and flowering conditions.

Choosing a place for rutaria

When choosing a place for arranging a clearing with snags, consider the following recommendations:

  • When creating an original composition with figurines, garden sculptures and bright flowers, it is better to place it in a prominent part of the garden or at the entrance to the house.
  • If you want to equip a forest-style rutaria, then the back of a shady garden will be the best place.
  • In addition, rutaria does not have to be located in the garden. A small corner can be placed even near the bathhouse. This is especially true if it is thematic. For a bath composition, you can use an old water tub along with other wooden elements.
  • If free space permits, it is allowed to place the meadow along the flower garden.
  • Ideally, arrange a root garden around the old tree stump that remains on your property. He will become the central component of rutaria.
  • Separately, mention should be made of the construction of a rutaria near a pond or an artificial reservoir. Such a composition looks quite impressive, especially if you plant original plant combinations, such as arrowhead and moisture-loving lilies.
  • What can we say, rutaria are even created on the veranda or in the house!

Selection of material for a root garden

After choosing a place for rutaria, you should start preparing the material:

  1. It is best to collect material for a root garden in the forest.
  2. The basis of the composition can be not only roots, but also different parts of trees, for example, bizarrely curved branches, a huge stump, a trunk sawn across.
  3. Stumps that you find in the water are also suitable for creating a root garden. Stained wood has a noble, darker color and is more resistant to natural influences.
  4. Useful when creating a garden of roots and other parts of the tree, which can be folded into a spectacular composition. Use bark, cones, small trees.
  5. Rutaria can include flowers, shrubs and herbaceous plants, berries.
  6. Look for logs and driftwood with interesting textures, covered with lichen or overgrown with moss. When choosing a material for rutaria, do not remove the bark.
  7. For rutaria and creating a stone border, stones that can be found near the river are suitable. Sizes, shapes and colors can be any.
  8. Among the decorative elements for the theme garden, prepare garden figurines, figurines of forest animals and cheerful gnomes, old tires and shoes, wooden dishes, original colored bottles. In rutaria, mushrooms and a cart wheel look great.
  9. The last constituent of rutaria is flowers and plants. It is recommended to plant creeping and undersized varieties, mosses and ferns. Among the branches, berry bushes look best.

Preparation and processing of material

The lifespan of a rock garden depends on the condition of the tree. Therefore, special attention should be paid to the preparation of the material:

  1. If you decide to uproot a tree to use its root system, try to keep as many roots as possible to make the composition look more interesting. Wash the roots from the ground after stubbing, cut off small, rotten and inconspicuous roots, cut down what is not needed.
  2. Depending on the rutaria idea, sand some parts of the wood with sandpaper. This will give it smoothness.
  3. To make the clearing more pleasing to the eyes, scald all the wood with boiling water. This will get rid of the larvae that live inside the tree.
  4. Treat all material with a special protective impregnation - a colorless antiseptic. So you ward off insects from rutaria and prevent the process of wood decay. Pay special attention to the bottom part, which you will bury in the ground.
  5. Remember that when wood is varnished, its natural original appearance is lost. But the root garden is conceived as such that personifies nature. But in general, this is a matter of taste.
  6. Rutaria can be made in one color scheme or become a contrast vice versa. If you plan to equip a rutaria, which has a rich color gamut, then cover some components of the composition with paint. However, be careful with contrasts.
  7. If a decorative stump is the centerpiece of your creation, then clear the area around it of debris. Also remove dry grass. Remove some debris from the middle of the stump. This will free up space for planting bushes and plants. Cover the inner walls with an anti-rotting agent. You should not remove moss from the stump, because it is the perfect addition to your composition.
  8. Clean the stones from any debris and plant residues, and then wait for them to dry. Cover them with varnish or paint if desired.
  9. Use driftwood and fabric to make rutaria decorations of your choice. Plant flowers inside the old shoe.

Plants for a rock garden

The composition will become bright and not so gloomy if, in combination with snags and stumps, plants, fresh flowers and shrubs grow in the summer cottage:

  • Do not plant very lush plants or those that have large and showy flowers, because you are focusing on the tree.
  • For a single composition, choose bright flowers. Periwinkle, chamomile, petunias, pansies, lilies of the valley, cornflowers, lilies and phlox look great in rutaria.
  • Curly ivy and ferns look original against the background of dry wood.
  • Combine moss, stonecrops, and lawn pieces with rock to add beauty to your root garden.
  • Bushes of strawberries, blueberries or lingonberries with berries, twisting around a large ancient stump, look interesting.
  • Dwarf conifers are sometimes planted around rutaria.
  • When choosing plants for rutaria, consider the flowering time of each one. So the corner will delight you throughout the summer season.

Making rutaria in the garden

Now it's time to decorate the root garden:

  1. The best time for setting up a kindergarten is May-June. During this period, the land is completely ready for planting flowers, shrubs and plants.
  2. At the first stage, according to the created sketch of your rutaria, all the wooden parts are placed - driftwood, roots, logs and branches, as well as stones. Arrange driftwood and roots separately or in groups. If you wish, you can make an original arch: fold the roots together and twist them with a pigtail. An arch like this is buried in the ground.
  3. It is recommended to leave a small distance among the elements of the composition. So it will be convenient to approach the plants.
  4. If it is planned to install vertical components - sticks, branches and poles, then fix them carefully in the ground. You can lay it with stones, you can dig it in. The main thing is to do everything harmoniously.
  5. After that, there is a turn of decorations and planting. Borders with red and gray stones, brown and green bottles look great.
  6. Plants should be started from the stump. Take out the rotten middle and fill in the soil with fertilizers in place of the dust. Plant seedlings or sow seeds. You can also place a pot with plants in this space, or an old shoe, as in the photo of rutaria. Such compositions look very original.
  7. Plant coniferous dwarfs between the driftwood directly into the ground. But you can also make a hollow in the snags for planting plants.
  8. The last stage in the construction of a root garden is to adjust and check with the plan. You can make any changes that you did not take into account in the sketch and did not come up with in advance.
  9. Fill the areas of soil that have remained empty with colored pebbles or cover them with pebbles.
  10. Place a seating bench near your garden. As a last resort, a log will do! If you wish, you can build a gazebo for relaxation.

Caring for a root garden

But if you think that after the arrangement of the rutaria you can forget about it, then you are mistaken. It requires constant care:

  • Keeping a root garden in order is all about caring for the plants. Many flowers need top dressing and loosening of the soil, not to mention regular watering. The main thing is to do all these manipulations in rutaria, adhering to the maximum accuracy.
  • Periodically, you can make changes to your composition. In the middle of summer, it is customary to plant additional plants or decorate the garden with new toys. Closer to autumn, it is advisable to cover some driftwood with red or yellow paint. Such changes are in perfect harmony with the autumn season.
  • It is possible that birds will settle in your garden. Take care of them too! Feed regularly. You can make a house for them, and build places for nests.
  • Cover perennial plants with spruce branches for the winter. Remove decorations and driftwood. And do not forget that all wood material will become unusable in a few years.

Thus, it is not difficult to make a garden of roots and snags on your site. The main thing in this business is rich imagination! And then even the most remote and gloomy corner will become an original place for the whole family to relax.

Rutary can be the main component of the design

When deciding to make an original composition on your site, you should take into account several nuances and tips. So, rutaria can act as an independent unit of landscape design, and be an auxiliary element in a complex composition. It is worth noting that in the first case, you will need to pay great attention and attract professionals, and in the second, everything is quite simple, and any novice gardener can cope with the task at hand.

Or auxiliary

The many benefits of rutaria include:

  • creativity
  • ease of creation
  • availability of all materials
  • ease of care
  • guaranteed success.

There are several types of rutaria.

Natural. This is the main type of rutaria. You can create it in the country, including in the composition those materials that are on the territory. For example, an old tree that has been cut down can become the basis for a future root garden. Small flowers that are planted directly into the stump will look quite original. Stone and moss should be included as a supplement and are also easy to obtain.

Hemp instead of flowerpots

The simplest. The composition includes exclusively driftwood and stumps. They will be a harmonious addition to the alpine slide, or they will find a place for themselves in a secluded corner of the garden.

Decorative. The most difficult type, since when it is designed and created, figures made of wood and various plants are necessarily included. Skilled craftsmen make fairy-tale characters and animals from unsightly snags. This will certainly require at least the advice of a professional, but as a result, you can get something more than a simple set of roots.

Principles of Root Gardening

A stump garden is formed according to certain rules so that it looks harmonious on the site. Remember the following points:

The style of the rutaria matches the landscape where it will be placed. It is incompatible with classical styles such as Baroque or Italian. The root garden looks good in a country house built in the usual mixed style, where there is nothing imposing, too rich and austere.

The composition is created in a certain direction, which is set initially. For example, a corner can be made scary for adults or fabulous for children. You can combine good and evil, where there is more good.

Rutaria in landscape design should look holistic and have one concept. It is necessary that it blends harmoniously with the surrounding environment.

The durability of the conceived composition is of no small importance, so carefully select the blanks.

The further the root garden is from its habitable areas, the more natural it should look. Consider this point when choosing elements and processing them.

It is necessary to have an idea of the appearance of the future garden. You may have to change the boundaries of the recreation area and the location of the site, buy and plant ornamental plants.

In the compositions, it is desirable to use stones that will be a good addition to the driftwood. Don't forget about interesting factory-made figurines.

Leave enough free space on the site so that it remains possible to care for it.

  • Set up a bench in the seating area.

  • How to make a rutaria with your own hands, driftwood in landscape design photo

Household plots can be faceless, having just a few beds, or you can show imagination and make a real fairy tale out of a summer cottage. One of the possible elements of transformation is rutaria. This landscape design decor is created with your own hands using wood, a new fashionable trend using snags, logs, stumps, roots and branches, the so-called "Root Garden".

Of course, if branches are carelessly scattered around the site, there will be no beauty here, and even more so some kind of originality of landscape design. But if you put together driftwood, flowers and other decorative elements (old bottles, tires, lanterns, figurines, stones) with your own hands, you will get an author's composition that can decorate the most unsightly place in the garden or, on the contrary, take the main thing. Of the flowers in the compilation of rutaria, creeping species and undersized perennials, moss are used. When planting flowers, consider their growth and growing characteristics.

The stump in the compilation of rutaria is the main element, do not uproot it, use it as much as possible in landscape design. Stones can be of any size and shape, they can be varnished, in small quantities they will become a point in the composition. Moss often lives on stumps and branches, it will become an addition and some value.

If you use a stump as a container for planting plants, then feel free to plant a fern, ivy or hostu, but first remove all the dust inside the stump, clean it and fill it with the necessary soil. You can plant asters, lilies, sedum, daisies around the stump. Do not hide the hollow in the snag, but also use it as a planting site, for example, rejuvenated, petunias or lobelia. Ornamental cereals will also be appropriate in the composition.

When drawing up rutaria, they use fairy gnomes who protect their home, swans from old tires, a wooden tub with an old wheel from a cart or a painted shoe, inside which to plant flowers.

After the rutaria is completed, it needs to be delineated. For this, bottles are suitable, turned upside down, stones. The shape of the border can be anything from a clear circle to wavy lines. The voids in any composition can always be covered with pebbles.

When making rutaria with your own hands, do not use only wood elements, be sure to add flowers, this will make the composition more interesting. When placing accents in the garden, pay attention to the color combinations.

How to increase the life of rutaria

Unfortunately, such natural compositions are short-lived, up to 3 years, depending on the state of the tree. You can increase the lifespan like this: first peel off the bark from the driftwood, then pour boiling water over all parts of the tree. This is done to destroy pests and their larvae inside the wood, such as the bark beetle. And also wood processing will allow you to stand longer in the sun, rain and frost. Then dry it and treat it with an antiseptic 2-3 times.

Using varnish will give the wood an unnatural shade. If this does not matter, then rutaria can be made multi-colored by painting parts of the tree with paint. However, no matter how we process the tree, over time it will still fall into disrepair, it dries up from the sun, and rots from moisture, but you should not be afraid of this and you do not need to give up such ideas.

Rutaria is best created in May-June, when the soil is well warmed up, when it is time to plant flowers and there is time to enjoy your work. Turn this into a place to relax, put up a bench or a sun lounger.

    Creation rules

In fact, there is no step-by-step instructions for creating a rutary as such, because this process is very creative. However, there are some unspoken rules for creating such decorations in the garden:

    1. To make a garden of snags and stumps successful, you need to imagine the desired end result in advance. And if you find it difficult to decide, then examples of photos and videos of beautiful do-it-yourself rutaria can be viewed in this article
    2. If the rutaria consists only of dead wood elements, then it will turn out to be quite gloomy, but very mysterious. If you want to get a bright garden from the roots, then it is better to use both inanimate and living elements.
    3. Sometimes driftwood and tree branches themselves draw a certain image, so it can only be supplemented. It is such works that will delight the guests of your home.
    4. Rutaria can only be created from stumps and plants, but other elements can also be used: ceramics, glass, natural stone, steel forging and much more.
    5. It is best to place it at the entrance to the cottage, because such a bright composition can immediately strike the guests of your home. You can also place such a mini-garden near a recreation area or near a small reservoir.
    6. If you have chosen a stump for your rutaria, then you can make a kind of pot out of it. To do this, you need to remove the core of the hemp, pour earth there and plant beautiful flowers. And around the stump, you can arrange various driftwood.
