Generally Zephyranthes has over 70 species of herbaceous, perennial, deciduous or evergreen all of American origin. Of the most cultivated species and hybrids used by gardeners in mild climate countries, flowering can also be induced artificially with abundant watering about a week before the desired time of flowering. Some species bear flowers that smell at night.

Zephyranthes chichimeca

It is a species native to Mexico where it forms large groups in the desert climate of these regions and produces white or pink flowers. It can be successfully grown in pots, but has not yet found applications in Europe.

Zephyranthes chlorosolen

It is a species native to the southern United States of America, it produces pleasantly scented white flowers that attract moths as pollinators during the night. It is highly appreciated in the gardens of the southern regions of the United States of America because its small flowers liven up any lawn.

Zephyranthes citrina

Zephyranthes citrina Forest & Kim Starr CC BY 3.0

It is a species native to the Yucatán peninsula in Mexico, very widespread also in European gardens.

Zephyranthes albiella

It is a species native to Colombia, it produces small, slightly inclined white flowers, which open from spring to autumn. In Europe this species is still unknown.

Zephyranthes arenicola

It is a species native to southern California characterized by large white flowers, which open in spring. This species is not found in Europe.

Zephyranthes atamasco

Zephyranthes atamasca David McAdoo CC BY-NC 2.0

It is a species native to the southern USA, which produces white flowers with pink hues. This is one of the tallest species, it reaches 30 cm, but due to its climatic needs it has not yet found a significant diffusion in Europe.

Beautiful Zephyranthes

It is a species native to Mexico, where it lives in semi-desert conditions. It is one of the smallest species of the genus, it produces soft pink flowers of extreme beauty.

Zephyranthes bifolia

It is a species native to Santo Domingo, which in early summer produces flowers that can reach a diameter of 7.5 cm.

Zephyranthes insularum

It is a species native to the West Indies, which produces small white flowers, externally tinged with pink, especially at the tips.

Zephyranthes grandiflora

Z. grandiflora, with a long stigma. To be pollinated it needs another clone, or it can be pollinated with other species, creating hybrids. It is sometimes confused with Habranthus robustus, but the flowers are different and it's a different species.

Zephyranthes grandiflora Luca Bove CC BY-SA 2.0

Zephyranthes katheriniae

It is a species native to Mexico, and produces pink, red and yellow flowers.

Zephyranthes lindleyana

Zephyranthes lindleyana Yaomautzin Ohtokani Olvera Lara - Eigenes Werk CC BY-SA 3.0

It is a species native to Mexico, which produces its large flowers on about 25 cm long stems normally in spring and occasionally and sporadically even later until autumn.

Zephyranthes longifolia

Advice for the cultivation of Zephyranthes

Cultivation in pots

Zephyranthes is also suitable for growing in bowls where it is essential to leave room for the diffusion of the bulbs.

zephyranthes with yellow flower

Cultivation in the open ground

If you want to grow in the garden, you need to plant the small bulbs at a depth equal to three times their height in a good garden soil with the addition of a universal soil for flowering plants made more permeable by river sand.

The bulbs can be planted following the “one yes, one no” rule. For good results it is advisable to regularly administer water and occasionally a mild liquid fertilizer for flowering plants.

The plant is very rustic and in the Mediterranean climate the bulbs can be left undisturbed for several years.

In colder climates, efficient mulching of the soil is essential or the bulbs can be dug up in late autumn to preserve them during the winter.

Temperature

In not too harsh climates, with adequate winter protection, the Rain Lily can also be grown outdoors. In climatic zones with very cold winters, the bulbs must be extracted from the ground and stored in peat in a cool place.

Light

The Rain Lily prefers sunny locations. It must be ensured that the plant receives the morning sun with protection from the hot summer rays of the afternoon, a good advice is to place the plant at the base of trees or shrubs from which the sun's rays are filtered.

Topsoil

The Rain Lily prefers soft soils that are always humid but well drained, tolerates poor soils as long as they are placed in partial shade.

Watering

Watering must be regular and frequent. Periods of drought followed by abundant irrigation stimulate copious blooms.

Multiplication

The multiplication of Zephyranthes takes place preferably by bulbils. It is also possible to do the multiplication by seed, only that generally it takes about a year and a half to obtain flowering plants and the seeds generally maintain their germinability for a short time.

Multiplication by bulbils

The multiplication occurs mainly thanks to the bulbils (smaller bulbs) that grow around the main bulb.

Fertilization

Only during the active growth of the plant is it fertilized once a month using a fertilizer richer in potassium (K) to promote flowering.

Pruning

The Rain Lily cannot be pruned, it is sufficient to eliminate only the parts that dry up or become damaged to prevent them from becoming a vehicle for parasitic diseases.

Other care tips

They multiply easily in autumn by separating the bulbs. The soil must be moist and in light penumbra. It suffers from excessive cold, so it is advisable to cover the plant left in place with straw or leaves.

Zephyranthes carinata

Photo from https://www.florianabulbose.com/

A bulbous plant that I have never grown and that I met thanks to a gift: I placed an order for Caladium bulbs and they gave me five bulbs of Zephyranthes carinata which I planted in pots a few days ago. It seems easy to grow and I share with you the information I have searched on the net, as well as the images and I hope to share the images of the flowering of my bulbs soon.
Good day, Francesco Diliddo

Curiosities and advice for the care of Zephyranthes carinata.

The name Zephyranthes comes from the Greek "Zephyros" zephyr (western wind) e "Anthos" flower then "Flower of the west wind" the wind that brings the rain that leads to the flowering of these species.
It is also known by the name of "Marsh lily", since in nature it can live in swampy areas or wet clearings and also "Rain Lily" as it blooms after heavy rains.
Zephyranthes belongs to the Amaryllidaceae family (genus Zephyranthes) and is native to the prairies of central and South America. These are bulbous plants with linear leaves, erect flowers, from funnel to tubular, solitary, white, purple, yellow or pink depending on the species. The maximum height that the entire plant reaches is 20-30 centimeters (then it depends on the species) so it is perfect for low borders, rock gardens or the edges of small ponds.
The solitary flower resembles a star, a small funnel facing upwards or slightly reclined with yellow stamens and white, pink or light yellow corollas.
The Zephyranthes carinata it blooms during spring and summer but some species bloom in autumn generally in conjunction with the release of the leaves. In nature, flowering is naturally induced by the abundant rains that follow the periods of drought for this reason it is very important when the bulbs are planted, after the winter period, to water abundantly. The flowers last only two or three days but the same plants can be stimulated to bloom repeatedly with abundant watering carried out several times during the spring / summer. After about ten days from watering, the plant magically blooms.

The bulbous plant prefers soft soils that are always moist but well drained, tolerates poor soils as long as they are placed in partial shade. Watering must be regular and frequent.
