An old friend is better than two new ones: the proven mid-early tomato variety Newbie

In botany, tomatoes are considered berries. For us, mere mortals, tomatoes are our favorite vegetables. We will not serve tomatoes for dessert or add to compote. Ripe fruits of this plant will go to salad, borscht or salting. For this we grow our favorite tomatoes of a wide variety of varieties. One of the very popular ones is the Newbie.

The story of an old acquaintance

In the late 1970s, under the leadership of Vladimir Shefatov at the Volgograd Experimental Station named after V.I. NI Vavilov, together with the Volgograd Agrarian University, created a new variety of tomatoes. Since 1982, he has been on variety testing at the State Commission of the Russian Federation for the Testing and Protection of Breeding Achievements. In 1986, it was decided to include Novichok tomatoes in the State Register of Breeding Achievements of the Russian Federation. The variety was approved for cultivation in the open field in the regions of the North Caucasus, the Middle and Lower Volga regions, and the Far East.

Appearance and characteristics of tomatoes Newbie

Tomatoes Novice medium early, they ripen in 114-127 days from germination.

The bushes of this tomato variety are low, determinant (limited in growth) by the nature of the plant's development. Their height ranges from 50 to 85 cm. The number of branches and leaves and their size are average. Above the fifth or seventh leaf, the first inflorescence appears, the next - through a leaf or two. As a rule, each bunch has 6–8 flowers, of which 4–7 ovaries are formed.

Bushes of tomato variety Novichok low (50-85 cm), determinate

Smooth oval-shaped fruits, when ripe, turn red with an orange tint. They are dense and fleshy, they are good both in salads and in homemade preparations. Tomatoes are almost the same in size, weighing 70-100 g. The peel of the fruit is dense, not prone to cracking and mechanical damage. Tomatoes tolerate transportation well and can be stored well for up to three months. Tomatoes contain 3-5 seed nests inside.

The taste is highly rated:

  • fresh tomatoes - 4-4.6 points;
  • juice made from them - 4.2 points;
  • whole canned tomatoes - 4.4 points.

The dry matter content in the tomato juice Novice is in the range of 5.2-6%.

The yield of marketable fruits, which the Novichok gave during the variety testing, amounted to 417-508 c / ha. The maximum achieved yield was 551 c / ha. The resistance of the variety to root-knot nematode was noted.

Since Novichok tomatoes are distinguished by friendly flowering and the same almost simultaneous ripening of fruits that do not crack when overripe and are resistant to mechanical damage, the variety is recommended for one-time mechanized harvesting and use in industrial canning.

Tomato agricultural technology Beginner

Growing Tomatoes Newbie is no more difficult than other varieties of tomatoes. Depending on the growing area, they are suitable for beds, greenhouses, greenhouses or film shelters.

Growing Tomatoes Newbie is just as easy as other tomato varieties

The process begins with sowing seedlings. If you grow it yourself, then you can start sowing seeds from mid-March to the first ten days of April. The term is chosen so that by the time the tomatoes are planted in a permanent place, the plants are 50-60 days old. This usually happens in the second half of May, when the chance of frost has passed.

To obtain friendly seedlings:

  1. First, weak and diseased seeds are discarded by immersing all the seed in a saline solution (1 teaspoon per glass of water). After a quarter of an hour, full-weight seeds will sink to the bottom of the vessel, and the unusable ones will stay on the surface.

Calibration of tomato seeds is carried out in a saline solution

  2. They are drained with part of the water, and high-quality ones are filtered through a cloth, washed several times with clean water, and dried.
  3. Before sowing, the seeds are disinfected in a weak solution of potassium permanganate.

Before sowing, the seeds are pickled in a weak solution of potassium permanganate

Seedling soil can be used purchased or prepared independently by mixing:

  • garden land - 1 part;
  • humus - 2 parts;
  • mullein - 1 part;
  • peat - 6–7 parts.

After filling the vessels for growing seedlings with soil, it is recommended to spray it with a solution of a growth stimulator at the concentration indicated in the instructions (Epin-extra, Kornevin, Zircon, Silk, sodium humate or other).

When landing, proceed as follows:

  1. The seeds are buried in the soil by about 1-1.5 cm.

It is better to plant tomato seeds right away in separate cups in order to avoid picks injuring the roots of seedlings

  2. Sprinkle them with a thin layer of earth.
  3. The container is covered with a transparent film or glass, placed in a warm place with a temperature of about 23-25 ºС.

To prevent tomato seeds from being exposed to temperature changes, it is better to place a container, covered with a film, away from the window before germination.

  4. After the emergence of seedlings, the shelter is removed.

With the appearance of the third true leaf, the seedlings are dived into separate containers for each plant (if the seeds were not planted in separate containers).

Water as the top layer of the earth dries up. It is important not to flood the seedlings - this can lead to the development of a black leg and the death of seedlings.

Seedlings are fed twice during the growing period:

  • 12-14 days after diving at 1 m2 4 g of ammonium nitrate, 30 g of superphosphate, 8 g of potassium chloride are added to the soil area;
  • after another three weeks, the amount of fertilizer is doubled.

Approximately 10 days before placing the seedlings in the garden, they begin to harden it, first taking it out for two to three hours in the open air or on a balcony, then increasing the hardening duration to a whole day.

Plants are planted according to the scheme 0.4 × 0.5 m.

Tomato seedlings are planted according to the scheme 0.4 × 0.5 m

Since tomatoes are very demanding on soil fertility, 10-15 days after planting in the ground, plants begin to fertilize:

  • the first top dressing for the growth of the bush is performed with a fertilizer containing nitrogen and sulfur, - ammonium nitrate - in the volumes and concentrations specified in the fertilizer instructions; you should not overfeed the bush with nitrogen, otherwise it will grow a lot of greenery to the detriment of yield;
  • during the flowering period and the beginning of the formation of ovaries, potash and phosphorus fertilizers are applied. It is best to use potassium monophosphate (one of the most concentrated phosphorus fertilizers, which simultaneously contains a lot of potassium) in a proportion of 10 g per 10 liters of water at the root;
  • then the whole period of fruiting tomatoes are fed with ash, which accelerates the ripening of fruits and improves their taste. The easiest way is to sprinkle ash around the bush, then water well and loosen the ground.

Watering should be moderate, in accordance with the weather, 1-2 times a week. For the prevention of diseases, it is recommended that one of the weekly watering be combined with the treatment of the soil with potassium permanganate in order to prevent tomato diseases. To do this, take 5 g of potassium permanganate for 10 liters of water. After watering with water, a glass of potassium permanganate solution is introduced under each plant.

The loosening and weeding necessary for tomatoes can replace mulching the soil with a 5-centimeter layer of organic matter (hay, wood shavings, peat, and so on).

Reviews of the variety Beginner

Novice's brother and namesake

The tomato Novice has a sibling, only pink, not red, and a namesake named Novice with a deluxe addition.

Rookie pink

In 2003, the originators of the Novichok variety sent a new Novichok pink tomato for variety testing at the Federal State Budgetary Institution "Gossortkomissia". He successfully passed the test and in 2006 was added to the State Register of Breeding Achievements of the Russian Federation.

Newbie pink - new in 2003 from the originators of the variety Novichok

The mid-ripening pink fruits of this variety are somewhat larger than those of their red counterpart - they weigh 80–113 g. Their taste is assessed as good. The yield of marketable fruits, which account for up to 89% of all harvested tomatoes, by weight was 318-588 centners per hectare on variety testing. In addition, the tomato Rookie pink is drought-resistant.

Rookie de luxe

Even later, the Novichok de Luxe tomato appeared, created by the Research Institute of Vegetable Growing in Protected Ground and the selection company "Gavrish". It was submitted for variety testing by the Federal State Budgetary Institution "State Breeding Commission" in 2007, and it was entered into the State Register of Breeding Achievements of the Russian Federation in 2011.

Tomato variety Novichok de luxe was created by the Research Institute of Vegetable Growing in Protected Ground and the selection company "Gavrish"

This medium-late ripening tomato has a universal purpose. It can be used as salad dressing, processed into tomato products, or whole canned. Red tomatoes of the Novichok de Luxe variety weigh 66–110 g. The taste is assessed as good and excellent.

The number of marketable fruits in the variety testing was 96% of the total harvest. In the North Caucasus region, the yield was 286-514 c / ha, like the standard Novichk and Novinka Kuban for this area, and in the Nizhnevolzhsky region - 243-633 c / ha, like the standard Novichk here.

Novice de luxe is resistant to fusarium and verticillosis.

Yielding, amicably and fairly early fruiting tomatoes The newcomer will appeal to many gardeners. He will especially delight lovers of harvesting for the winter. It will also appeal to those who do not have enough free time for careful plant care. No wonder it is said: "An old friend is better than two new ones." The tomato, which has been tested by gardeners in different regions for more than one year, will not yield to many newfangled varieties.

Characteristics of tomato Beginner

Features of the Novice tomato include the relative simplicity of the plant to grow, disease resistance, and a wide range of applications.

Tomato Productivity Newbie

On average, up to 2 kg of a mature crop is harvested from each bush. On each 1 m 2, it is allowed to plant up to 7 bushes, as a result, from the same area of plantings of tomatoes of the Novichok pink variety, from 6 to 14 kg of harvest are harvested. Subject to all agrotechnical recommendations, the variety can show higher productivity.

Scope of the fruit

The Novice pink tomatoes are characterized by their versatility in use. Due to their relatively small size, tomatoes can be used for pickling and pickling. The fruits remain intact even after boiling water during the preparation of the marinade. Tomatoes are also consumed fresh, they are used to prepare salads and other dishes.

The variety is recommended for growing on an industrial scale. This is due to various factors, including the simultaneous ripening of the crop.

Disease and pest resistance

The variety is resistant to the main diseases that affect nightshade crops. The resistance of the Novice pink can be significantly reduced if the cultivation technology is not followed.

Among the pests, the Colorado potato beetle can cause the greatest harm to the plantings of the Pink Novice. Bushes are also affected by spider mites and slugs.

Advantages and disadvantages of the variety

The main positive properties of the variety include:

  • low growth of bushes with a small number of stepchildren, which greatly simplifies the care of the plantings
  • stable and high yield
  • versatility of fruits
  • unpretentiousness and ease of care
  • medium early ripening, simultaneous ripening of tomatoes
  • possibility of growing without tying
  • high degree of keeping quality, the possibility of transportation over long distances while maintaining the marketability and taste
  • high frost resistance and winter hardiness, which allows you to grow Novichok pink on the territory of various regions of Russia
  • the ability of seeds to carry all the varietal characteristics and properties of the mother plant.

Over the years of study, no flaws were found in the tomato variety in question. All the positive aspects of the Newbie pink are manifested exclusively when it is cultivated in accordance with technology.

Tomato variety Gnome, description, characteristics and reviews, as well as cultivation features

Every year, a huge number of new varieties of tomatoes appear on the shelves. The dwarf dwarf with small fruits has already met the expectations of the breeders. It has been grown in summer cottages throughout the country for over 10 years.

History and description of the variety

Tomatoes were not always popular, there was a time when they were even considered poisonous. However, later they were "rehabilitated" and took one of the leading positions in the market. Tomato growing experienced a real boom at the end of the 20th century; since then, breeders have bred thousands of new varieties.

One of them was Gnome - a project by three amateurs from the USA and Australia, which began in the 2000s.

Low-growing and cold-resistant tomatoes of the Gnome variety are also grown in Russia

This fruitful, cold-resistant and unpretentious variety has been adapted for Russia.

In 2013, especially for our country, the Merry Dwarf tomatoes were bred, the fruits of which are larger (up to 90 g) and have a cylindrical shape.

The Vesely Gnome variety was bred for cultivation in Russia, entered into the State Register in 2013

The plant is undersized, up to 50 cm high. The leaves are light green, medium-sized. There are few branches, so pinching is not required.

The first inflorescences appear as the bush grows, after 6-7 leaves, the rest - after 1-2. Fruits are small, but larger than cherry, weighing 50-60 g, bright, red, round in shape.

Delicious and dense, they are well stored, during transportation they do not lose their shape, do not crack.

Fruits are small, weighing 50-60 g, with dense pulp

From emergence to fruiting of tomatoes about four months. Plants are unpretentious, tolerate cool weather well, so in the middle lane they can be grown outdoors.

In more northern areas, it is better to plant in a greenhouse or under film shelters. Under any weather conditions, the plant sets fruit well and brings a consistently high yield (up to 5.5 kg per 1 sq.

The variety is resistant to macrosporiosis and late blight.

Growing varieties of tomatoes Gnome

The end of February and the beginning of March are the time when there is still snow outside the window, and a new garden season is already beginning on our windowsills.

Sowing seeds and caring for seedlings

Seeds are sown in February-March in seedling boxes to a depth of about 1 cm. They are covered with foil to ensure high humidity and placed in a warm place, closer to heating devices.

At this stage, ventilation is carried out 1-2 times a day until dry. If, nevertheless, mold has formed, it is carefully removed and the soil is spilled with a solution of an antifungal drug (for example, Fitosporin or Fundazol) or potassium permanganate.

When sprouts appear, the seedlings are rearranged in a bright place, on the windowsill. In February-March, the day is still short, so it is desirable, although not necessary, illumination with fluorescent lamps - the seedlings will still not stretch out.

Water as needed - when the topsoil dries out, excess moisture for tomatoes is harmful.

When sprouts, in addition to two cotyledons, form two true leaves (or more, if the seedlings do not grow together), the plants dive - they are planted in separate pots.

Seedlings of tomatoes Gnome do not stretch, even if the lighting is not enough

Landing in open ground

Tomatoes are planted in open ground 60 days after emergence.

Dates depend on the region: for central Russia, this is the second decade of May-early June in the areas recommended for this variety (Volgo-Vyatka region), due to cold resistance, an earlier planting is possible in early May.

However, this plant remains a southerner, therefore, if there is a threat of frost, it is better to take care of the shelter - with a film or specialized materials.

Disembarkation is carried out in cloudy weather or, if the days are sunny, in the evening. The bushes of this variety are small, do not require a lot of space, so they can be planted compactly - up to 6 plants per 1 sq. m.

Care is usual, uncomplicated: fertilizers are applied every two to three weeks, weeds are regularly removed, preventive measures are taken to protect against diseases and pests.

The need for moisture in tomatoes is quite high, especially during the period of fruit setting. But high air humidity contributes to the development of fungal diseases in the plant. It is not recommended to irrigate tomatoes from a watering can by sprinkling. It is better to choose drip irrigation.

Drip irrigation can be done using an inverted plastic bottle

At the beginning of growth, tomatoes need to be fed with phosphorus fertilizers, during flowering and fruit formation, the need for nitrogen is higher, and during the period of fruit ripening, in potassium.

Reviews of summer residents

The undoubted advantage of the Gnome tomato variety is the stability of fruiting in changeable weather conditions and resistance to diseases. In the north of Russia, they will also grow, but here it is better to plant them in greenhouses or greenhouses in order to protect them from freezing.

Characteristics and description of the tomato variety Novice, growing and care

Tomatoes are appreciated for their taste and health benefits. But the best are those that are grown by their own hands. The taste and health benefits of tomatoes often depend on their varietal qualities. Tomato Novice has high performance, the characteristic and description of the variety of which may interest you.

Characteristics and description of the variety

Tomato variety Novichok, bred in Russia more than 30 years ago, belongs to the mid-early determinant forms of this culture. Recommended for outdoor cultivation, but some growers also grow in greenhouse conditions. The plant has a compact shrub with an average number of medium-sized leaves. The height of the tomato varies between 50-80 cm.

The first brush with flowers is formed over 6 or 7 leaves, then they grow every 1-2 leaves. The ripening time of the fruits is 114-127 days from the moment the planting material emerges or 55 days from the moment the home-grown seedlings are planted in open ground.

The fruits of the Novice tomato are dense, have a red or orange-red color, a slightly elongated shape and a weight of about 80-100 g. The taste is rich tomato, the flesh is sugary, the smell is sweet. The yield is about 2-3 kg of tomatoes from 1 bush, while up to 6-7 tomatoes are formed on one brush. They ripen together.

The Novichok variety has a number of advantages for which it is appreciated by gardeners. These include:

  • root-knot nematode resistance
  • high quality and good harvest
  • friendly fruiting
  • beautiful appearance of the fruit
  • good transportability, tomatoes are suitable for transportation over long distances without losing their beautiful presentation
  • fruit resistance to mechanical damage
  • versatility of use
  • the possibility of cultivation in various ways
  • good keeping quality of fruits.

Agrotechnics of cultivation and care

Growing and caring for Novichok tomatoes in general does not differ from the cultivation of other tomatoes. First of all, the seeds must go through all stages of preparation.

First, culling is carried out, which allows sorting out those planting material that is not suitable for use. It is carried out by manually selecting large and full-bodied seeds, or by dipping all the material into salted water (1 tsp / 1 glass of water).

After 5-10 minutes, unusable seeds will appear on the surface, and good ones will drown. They are caught and washed with water.

Next comes the disinfection stage. To do this, tomato seeds are dipped in a potassium permanganate solution for 25 minutes, and then washed again with clean water.

Then, for 24 hours, they are soaked in growth stimulants or in an ash solution: for 1 liter of water, take 20 g of ash and use it for about a day.

They can then be germinated by placing them in moistened gauze or toilet paper. This procedure will allow you to get seedlings faster.

Sowing of the Novice tomato planting material is carried out approximately 2 months before the date of the planned planting of seedlings in open ground. The optimal dates are late March or early April. Sowing is recommended in boxes filled with fertile soil for seedlings. You can also use individual pots, for example from peat.

The substrate for tomatoes can be prepared independently - good soil from the garden is mixed in equal parts (you can take forest soil), well-rotted humus, as well as sand.

Add 100 g of crushed eggshell to a bucket of this mixture and mix all the components thoroughly.

It is recommended to pre-disinfect the soil for growing tomato seedlings with a 3-5% solution of potassium permanganate.

Seeds are sown to a depth of no more than 10 mm. From above, they are covered with a thin layer of soil. Boxes with future seedlings are closed with foil and removed to a bright and warm place (at least 23-25 degrees).

As soon as tomato sprouts appear, the temperature is lowered to 12-15 ºС during the day and 8-10 ºС at night. In a couple of days, after the seedlings get stronger, the temperature rises to 20-25 ºС during the day and 10-12 ºС at night. When 2 true leaves appear, tomato seedlings dive into individual cups with a diameter of at least 8 cm.

Before planting seedlings, the bushes are hardened, weak and bifurcated plants are discarded. It is possible to plant seedlings only after the frosts recede and the soil warms up to at least 15 degrees.

Tomatoes are planted according to the scheme 50 * 40 cm in two rows. Thus, up to 6 bushes can be planted per 1 m2.

You need to take care of the Novice tomato in the same way as for other varieties. Watering, loosening the soil, fertilizing, weeding, bush formation and tying should be present:

  • watering is necessary rare, but abundant. You should not flood the bushes, despite the fact that abundant irrigation is advised to be done during the formation of ovaries and at the initial stage of fruit formation. With a lack of moisture, tomatoes are affected by apical rot, and with an excess of gray rot
  • for the first time hilling tomatoes is carried out 15-20 days after planting
  • the first time fertilizers are used after 10-15 days (per 1 m2, it is enough to apply 6 g of potassium salt and urea and 20 g of double superphosphate). With the formation of a vegetative mass and the formation of fruits, liquid organic fertilizing is used (for example, about 600 ml of mullein solution per 1 plant)
  • it is better to form a bush in 1-2 stems. The stepsons are removed regularly.

Fruit use

Tomatoes Novik - a versatile variety, suitable for preparing salads, various dishes. Housewives especially love to preserve it, as small and beautiful tomatoes look great in a jar. And the taste according to the reviews of summer residents turns out - you will lick your fingers. The shelf life of fresh tomatoes is 2-3 months.

Reviews of summer residents

About tomatoes Newbie reviews can be found a lot - after all, the variety is many years old, and many gardeners managed to try it. There are many positive ones among them.

I bought this variety last year for the first time and, frankly, at random. I just liked the picture on the package. But I must say that after this casual acquaintance, I became friends with the Novice. In general, I was struck by the germination of the planting material - it turned out to be 100%. The seedlings survived even with modest care - another plus.

Some of them were planted in a greenhouse, some - on the street. The bushes were found to be resistant to late blight. They grew very quickly, I was tired of pinching them, but the result was worth it - the average harvest from a bush in a greenhouse is 40 tomatoes, from the street - about 25. Preserved fresh for almost 3 weeks, the rest was used for preparation, and they came out, as they say, real jam.

Lana These tomatoes attracted me with their shape - very beautiful. I decided to try to grow. I can note the following advantages for myself - good germination, excellent taste, unpretentiousness, fruits ripen early. But the minus is still a somewhat modest yield, it could have been more. I liked the pickled form very much.

Elena After my experience I can safely recommend this variety to everyone. I did not find any drawbacks for myself. Moreover, there was something to compare - at the same time with Novichok I grew 10 more varieties and hybrids. This is an unpretentious tomato resistant to any infection. Rises quickly, not capricious.

It can be planted in open ground, with proper care it gives a good harvest that can be stored for a long time. Wife makes gorgeous blanks. Mark

A beginner is the kind of tomato that is worthy of attention and deserves to be tried to grow in your country house or garden plot. In any case, the final conclusions regarding its quality can only be drawn after close contact with plants.
