Often summer residents think about how to accelerate the ripening of tomatoes without the use of chemicals. Because the use of harmful substances can lead to poor health. However, there are folk ways in which the tomatoes do not even need to be plucked from the bush.
Experienced gardeners are advised to pick off the lower foliage on the bushes. This must be done so that it does not take nutrients from the crop when the fruits ripen. Thanks to this method, the plants are better ventilated and more sunlight gets on them.
Some flower stalks should be plucked on the plants, especially when the weather forecast is cold. New fruits will still not have time to grow, and small tomatoes will stop developing.
The bush will not yield a high yield due to lack of nutrients.
After cutting off the peduncles, the culture will direct all its forces to the ripening of already formed tomatoes.
Watering with potassium permanganate is considered a proven folk method for improving the taste and rapid ripening of fruits. To do this, you need to prepare a slightly pink solution and fertilize the beds. Thus, you can disinfect the earth and the bushes will not die from diseases. Potassium permanganate contains a lot of potassium, which is responsible not only for the taste, but also for the ripening of tomatoes.
If a person does not plan to lay tomatoes for storage, but immediately eats them, then the fruits can be slightly damaged. Such tomatoes quickly turn red and become soft. You need to take a sharp object and make several punctures near the stalk.
For plants, frequent foliar feeding with iodine solution will be beneficial, because the drug accelerates the ripening of fruits. And also this element prevents the spread of diseases, microorganisms and harmful bacteria. To treat the plant, you need to dissolve 30 drops of the substance in 10 liters of water, add detergent or liquid soap for adhesion and treat the bushes.
Many summer residents know that ripe fruits emit ethylene gas, which contributes to the rapid ripening of neighboring fruits and vegetables. For this reason, experienced gardeners put ripe bananas near the bushes. After that, the tomatoes ripen quickly.
You can use vodka, which also accelerates the ripening of tomatoes, by injecting a few drops of alcohol into the tomato with a syringe. This procedure will not affect the taste of the vegetable in any way.
If you put a ripe vegetable next to green tomatoes, the ripening process will accelerate. The effectiveness of this method is explained by the fact that the ripe vegetable releases ethylene, which accelerates the ripening of its green "brothers". To make the tomatoes in the beds turn red faster, put a bag containing a ripe tomato right on the unripe bunch. Tie a bag to the stem and leave for 2 days, then remove the bag.
Look closely at all the bushes in the beds and remove any new stepchildren. You should also remove the lower leaves to the level of the brushes with ripening tomatoes.
New flowers and buds on the bushes are no longer needed, because young tomatoes will not have time to grow, but they will take away the strength from the plant. Pinch or cut off the tops of tall bushes and remove any existing buds from them. On medium to short bushes, remove any existing flower brushes.
Top dressing with iodine solution will help speed up the ripening of tomatoes. It is necessary to carry out two foliar treatments. Dissolve 40 drops of iodine in 10 liters of water and treat the bushes.
Some summer residents practice very extreme ways to accelerate the ripening of tomatoes. Despite the apparent cruelty, these methods are very effective. For example, at a height of about 15 cm from the ground, a through cut is made in the stem with a blade. After that, a flat wooden plate is inserted into the incision. This method allows you to limit the inflow and outflow of nutrients and greatly accelerates the ripening of green tomatoes. Instead of a notch with a plate, you can use a wire. At the same height, you need to drag the stem with it. The pulling effect will not be long in coming - the tomatoes will begin to ripen much more actively.
There are some tricks that can be used to stimulate the ripening of green tomatoes. Let's look at basic and effective ways to help stimulate maturation.
Important! If the night temperature drops below 10 degrees Celsius, then it is imperative to remove the fruits from the bush along with the stalk and send them for ripening at home.
For intensive ripening, the fruits, of course, need the sun. At the end of the summer season, it is necessary eliminate extra leaves that cover the fruits from light. You also need to substitute supports under the lower brushes and carefully turn these branches with fruits towards the sun and tie it to a support or fix it with stakes, spacers. Also, thanks to the manipulation, the vegetables on the lower shoots will not come into contact with the ground.
As you know, ripe fruits and vegetables can secrete a plant hormone (phytohormone) - ethylene, which promotes faster maturation of green counterparts. By the way, it is used for ripening crops on an industrial scale. But in your garden, this method can also be applied, but on a smaller scale.
Roughly speaking, if you put a green tomato next to a ripe, the latter will ripen much faster.
To stimulate maturation it is recommended to carefully immerse a twig with green fruits in a bag containing ripe tomatoes, carefully tie and fix the bag to a support... In this form, you need to leave them for about 3 days. After such a trick, the fruits will begin to ripen very intensively.
A little trick! In addition, you can use a ripe banana (or at least just a peel) instead of ripe tomatoes.
Recommended collect brown tomatoes from the bush and at home, let them ripen... This manipulation will help to ripen more green fruits. If you leave brown tomatoes on a branch, then they will "pull the blanket" over themselves, that is, all the food will go to their full ripening to the detriment of green specimens.
To speed up the ripening of tomato fruits, it is recommended to produce foliar top dressing (spraying on the leaf) with iodine solution... It is believed that the pharmaceutical agent stimulates the ripening of the crop. To prepare the solution, you must mix 30 drops of the drug and 10 liters of lukewarm water (standard bucket).
In total, it is recommended to feed the plants with such folk fertilizer once or twice (with an interval of 7-10 days).
Important! It is recommended to make iodine feeding of tomatoes in the evening or in cloudy weather, so that the plant does not get burns due to the sun's rays.
By the end of the season, it is recommended to remove new flower stalks and buds., because they not only no longer represent any value (they still will not have time to grow to a full harvest), but also delay the ripening of green fruits, taking away the strength of the bush. In short and medium-sized plants, flower brushes should be removed. But in tall ones, in addition to this, it is recommended to cut off the top.
As already noted in the first paragraph, you need remove leaves (especially the lower ones), which cover the fruit from the sun's rays.
Note! To stimulate more intense and faster ripening, it is imperative to pinch the tomatoes (remove the stepchildren (useless shoots) from the leaf axils).
In the case when the fruits are poured, but reluctantly turn red, it is recommended reduce watering and stop applying fertilizers containing nitrogen.
This method can be referred to as alcoholic stimulation of tomato ripening. It should be carried out at the moment when green fruits are poured to the size characteristic of a particular variety. During this period, it is necessary introduce 0.5 milliliters of 40% vodka in the region of the stalk... Thanks to the ethylene in the composition, tomato ripening occurs more intensively: after about two weeks they will ripen.
To do this, it is necessary to make a small longitudinal through-hole in the lower part of the stem (approximately at a height of 10 cm from the ground) incision with a sharp and disinfected knife. The length of the incision is 2-3 centimeters.
Then insert a small piece of wood into this cut (the optimal length is 2 cm, and the width is 0.5 cm). It turns out that the stem in this area is disconnected, but at the same time tissue rupture does not block the movement of nutrients, but significantly limits them. Due to the stress that has arisen, the plant begins to direct all its forces towards the intensive ripening of fruits.
Just like the above method, stimulating the ripening of the tomato crop with this method seems a little barbaric. The essence of the method is as follows: at a height of three centimeters from the ground, you need to wrap the stem with a thin copper wire, while the wire should not cut too hard into the tissue of the stem. Due to this manipulation, less nutrients will be supplied to the plant's root system, but more tomatoes will be supplied to the fruits!
There is one more trick - you need gently pick up the base of the stem of the tomato bush and slightly pull it out of the ground... The stop signal of the event is a weak crunch of tearing weak roots, then you need to release the plant.
By pulling the tomato bush out of the soil, the torn roots stop transporting nutrients and moisture, which forces the plant to more intensively direct nutrition to the fruits.
The method of ripening on the bushes is ideal for the autumn period, when the cold has already come, and there are still many green fruits on the bushes in the greenhouse or open field. The scheme of the method is quite simple: you need to carefully pull out or dig up the tomato bushes together with the root
In this position ("upside down"), the fruits will receive more nutrients.
This photo well illustrates the ripening of tomatoes suspended on bushes at home, only they are too close to each other:
Note! At the end of the growing season (i.e. late summer - early autumn), a change in conditions is observed - the weather becomes more humid and cooler, that is, ideal for the development of a dangerous disease late blight. The disease can destroy your plants along with the harvest. To prevent this from happening, you need to pay attention prevention of late blight (spray with fungicides, cover the bushes in the open field at night with film), and, if necessary, treatment.
Any summer resident and gardener wants to get a good and large harvest of tasty and healthy vegetables. It is in your power to achieve the maximum result, but for this you need to try.
There are several ways that will make it clear to tomato bushes that you need to "add speed" and start to blush faster. And these methods should be applied today, in the ambulance mode.
New buds and flowers that the plant continues to "expel" are simply not needed today. Young tomatoes still won't have time to ripen, and they will take away the strength from the bush, so all the tops of tall bushes need to be pinched or cut off, and all the inflorescences should be removed. On medium-sized and undersized bushes (even if it's a pity), you will have to remove all the "extra" flower brushes - they will no longer have enough strength for a large number of fruits.
It is necessary to inspect all the bushes and remove new stepchildren. And all the lower leaves, up to those brushes on which the tomatoes ripen, too.
In the next video, Natalia Petrenko will show how the removal of flower brushes and stepsons is carried out in practice.
In order for the tomato bushes to get the maximum of the autumn sun, try to remove all the extra leaves, and turn the branches as much as possible towards the light. On a trellis, this is easy to do with a garter, and branches of low-growing bushes can be fixed with spacers or tied to additional stakes.
It is known that feeding with iodine accelerates the ripening of tomatoes. Spend 1-2 foliar dressings on the leaves with a weak iodine solution (at the rate of 30-40 drops per 10 liters of water) - this will only benefit.
Although autumn is already on its way, it is not recommended to stop the late blight prophylaxis. You can spray tomatoes with garlic infusion in dry warm weather (this will definitely be the last time). If your tomatoes grow in the open field, it is advisable to arrange for the bushes to be sheltered with a film at night. This will also protect tomatoes from late blight: the bushes will not get wet from dew, and the fruits will remain dry.
Some summer residents practice rather frightening, at first glance, methods that contribute to the rapid ripening of tomatoes. Their meaning boils down to limiting the supply of nutrients to the plant, and the actions resemble a surgical operation:
In the next video, the chairman of the "Harvest" club, Galina Volkova, will show how these three methods can be implemented.
It is a well-known fact: if you put ripe tomatoes next to green tomatoes, then the reddening of immature fellows accelerates many times over. There is a completely simple explanation for this: the release of ethylene by a ripe tomato (as a catalyst), but it looks really impressive So, if you "put" a bag with a red fruit inside right on a bunch of green tomatoes and, tying it to the stem, leave it for three days, and then remove it, then literally for 2-3 days the green tomatoes will start to turn brown, while naturally this process would start only after 2.5-3 weeks. To conduct such an experiment is the business of every gardener!
The report that scientists have tested the effect of ethyl alcohol on the ripening process of tomatoes came as no surprise. Our people would be completely “not our people” if they had not treated their favorite vegetable with vodka ... But, what is most surprising, the experiment was crowned with complete success. So write down: if 0.5 ml of vodka is injected with a syringe through the nest of a green tomato, ripening will accelerate (and in 15-16 days, it may be fully ripe). Moreover, scientists guarantee that the chemical composition of such "drunk" tomatoes will not differ from ordinary ones.
To make it possible to ripen as many tomatoes as possible on the bushes, the brown fruits must be removed. They are already able to reach ripeness with home ripening, and the bush will throw all its strength on the remaining green tomatoes.
If the cold weather has already come, and there are still a lot of green fruits on your tomato bushes, you can, by pulling the plants out of the soil along with the roots, move them to a closed room - a shed, a shed or a garage - where you can hang them. Then the ripening process will continue in an almost natural way, "at the root".
And finally, as an example of the ability to harvest tomatoes until the very frost, - a video where we will visit Valery Medvedev's greenhouse in October
Autumn and cold weather will still take their toll, but it's great to realize that you can still win back your well-deserved kilograms of priceless harvest from nature with your own strength and with very simple methods!
Join us - and our kilograms will turn into centners and tons! What about? Or are we not summer residents?
The tomato season is just beginning, and you can't wait to enjoy your own fruits grown in the country? Or, maybe, frost is about to come, and the bushes are full of brushes with green tomatoes, and you want to make preparations from tomatoes for the winter? However, it doesn't matter what motivates your desire to harvest as soon as possible. In any case, you have come to the right place. Now we'll talk about how to speed up the ripening of tomatoes.
How to accelerate the ripening of late tomatoes in the open field?
There are many ways to significantly reduce the ripening time of tomatoes. The easiest is to stop feeding and watering. The plant will begin to suffer due to unfavorable conditions and will direct all its forces to the development of "offspring" - fruits. But keep in mind that no watering is only suitable for the last harvest. All flowers and small ovary will dry out.
You can also pull the roots slightly to speed up the ripening of the tomatoes. This is easy to do. You just need to grab the bush with both hands and pull it up slightly. Just do not overdo it, otherwise you will vomit it completely. If you doubt your strength, resort to splitting the stem:
1. With a sharp knife, make a longitudinal through-cut of the stem at a height of at least 2.5-3 cm from the root.
2. Make sure the length of the cut is at least 5 cm and no more than 10 cm.
3. Insert a wooden match or chip of the same thickness into the gap that appears.
That's all. The plant is injured, so it will rush to return the fruit.
Another good method for speeding up the ripening of tomatoes outdoors is to bandage the stem with a thin wire. Gently wrap the wire around the stem at a height of 2.5-3 cm and pinch a little. The wire should slightly squeeze the plant, but not damage it. In this case, the movement of nutrients to the root will be difficult. Therefore, tomatoes will not only ripen quickly, but also gain a special sweetness.
All of the above methods will help speed up the ripening of tomatoes by 2-3 weeks. It will also be a good help for the ripening of fruits, removing most of the vegetation mass: leaves, stepsons, fruiting branches. Do not touch only the leaves located above the branches with brushes, and cut off the rest without regret. In this case, all the nutrients will go exactly to the fruit, and not "dissolve" through the bush. Just keep in mind: you cannot pull out the entire vegetative mass in one day. Maximum you can pick 2-4 leaves per day. Then the plant will not experience stress.
How to accelerate the ripening of early tomatoes in the open field?
Regular vodka will help you get the first tomatoes before your neighbors. Yes, do not laugh, it is ethyl alcohol that provokes the rapid reddening of the fruit. What should be done with vodka?
• Gently wipe the fruit with a soft cloth dipped in vodka. You need to repeat the procedure for three days in a row.
• Inject 0.5 ml of vodka into the tomato you like with a syringe. Re-introduction of vodka is not required.
Choose for yourself which method you prefer. In any case, after this "execution" tomatoes can be expected in 7-10-14 days, depending on the natural ripeness of the tomato. Brown and milky ones will ripen earlier, and dark green ones a little later.
The addition of ripe tomato also accelerates the ripening of tomatoes well. It will release natural ethylene and thus provoke "neighbors". To do this, place a ripe tomato in a plastic bag, and then pull this bag over a tomato brush. You need to secure the bag with a soft rope (preferably a narrow strip of natural fabric) so as not to damage the plant. The package should be kept on the bush for three days. Then you can take it off and wait for the harvest. "Neighbors" will ripen in 7-10-14 days, depending on the level of natural maturity.
In addition, you can sprinkle the plants with an iodine solution at the rate of: 10 drops of alcoholic tincture of iodine per 10 liters of water. But this method does not always help. In addition, if you accidentally overdo it with iodine, the plant begins to hurt.
How to accelerate the ripening of tomatoes at home?
Of course, the option is not suitable for everyone - to wait for the ripeness of the tomato for two weeks. After all, someone needs to leave the dacha and go to the city, but it is simply a pity to leave the harvest on the bushes. What to do in this case? Don't get discouraged and harvest the entire crop!
Tomatoes ripen well at home if you make a few manipulations with them:
1. Inspect the harvested tomatoes for damage. Everything that is infected with late blight, as well as that which was crushed, punctured, is not suitable for storage.
2. Tear off the stalks from the tomatoes. This will speed up the ripening process. If you want to extend the ripening process, leave the stalks on the darkest tomatoes.
3. Sort the tomatoes by size and ripeness. Fold separately brown, milky (light green) and dark green.
4. Pack the darkest ones in a cardboard box, sprinkling with sawdust. Dairy also does not hurt to put in a box with sawdust. And brown ones do not need sawdust, since you will be the first to use and preserve them.
Now, it all depends on the storage temperature. The most favorable temperature is 24-25 degrees Celsius. Green tomatoes intended for later ripening should be stored at no more than 8-10 degrees Celsius.
If you want the green tomatoes to ripen as soon as possible, shake out the sawdust and place a few ripe tomatoes on top of them. Just remember to review the fruits every day. Unfortunately, no matter how much you want, absolutely all tomatoes will not be able to ripen. Something will start to deteriorate. But if you examine them every day, you will be able to save almost 90%. So do not be lazy, and then even in late autumn you will eat your tomatoes.
So, we figured out how to speed up the ripening of tomatoes. There is only one piece of advice left: if possible, let the tomatoes ripen for as long as possible on the bush! In this case, the taste and usefulness of the fruit is much higher. And yes: don't be afraid of frost. You can take off the fruits even after the first "matinee".
You can also learn how to grow tomatoes on a windowsill. You will be able to harvest fresh tomatoes even in winter.
You have probably come across such a term as “ripening”. This beautiful word means the process of reddening tomatoes outside the garden. That is, when the tomatoes are picked from the bush and laid out in the sun. For example, on a sunny windowsill, where they subsequently mature. This is done quite often where the tomatoes simply do not have time to turn red on the bush. The warm period is already ending, and there are still many tomatoes on the bushes.
Collect tomatoes from the bush, and when they are threatened by late blight. Which, again, is usually associated with not quite suitable weather for this culture. But, we are now talking not about this way of reddening tomatoes. You can make the tomatoes turn red without ripping them off the bush. And it's very simple.
Vodka! Yes, it is vodka that makes red and juicy fruits from tough green tomatoes. Moreover, she solves this problem quite quickly.
It is necessary to "feed" the tomatoes with vodka using a syringe and a thin needle. Vodka is simply drawn into a syringe and injected into a tomato. You need to make such an injection carefully, without fanaticism, so that your tomatoes do not "ooze".
One fruit needs no more than a cube of vodka.
After such a vodka injection, tomatoes turn red much faster - about two weeks before the date assigned to them by nature. Fear not, the taste of tomatoes will not change. When they hit your table, not a drop of alcohol will be in them. So, if you can't wait to eat a fresh tomato from your garden, give them vodka to drink!
Have you tried planting tomatoes upside down? Quite an interesting method that saves space on the site. How to do this, read here.
And two videos from which you will learn a few more ways to make tomatoes blush quickly. Watching the first video.
If you are thinking about what to do to make tomatoes blush faster in the greenhouse, but do not know what to do, then this material will help answer the main questions. To begin with, tomatoes cannot ripen slowly for no apparent reason. So, you will have to pay close attention to your harvest, to understand what exactly is happening, how to make the fruits turn red faster.
The development of tomatoes, regardless of which variety is grown, goes through two stages. In the first month after the ovary, the fruit will grow rapidly, and then within 2-3 weeks it should fully ripen. If the vegetable has enough of everything, then the tomato will gradually turn red during this period. At first, the fruit will be green, then brown, and then, gradually, it will turn red.
If, within the specified time frame, complete reddening did not occur with the tomatoes, this means that something is wrong with your crop. If tomatoes take more than three weeks to turn red, this does not happen without a reason.
Possible reasons why tomatoes turn red slowly:
1. Unfavorable temperature for growth. This is the most common reason why tomatoes turn red faster in the greenhouse. What to do in such a situation? See if fruits grow in conditions below 15 degrees Celsius or above 35 degrees Celsius. Due to the low or high temperature in the fruits, a violation of the synthesis of a substance occurs, which is responsible precisely for the red color. In such a situation, the tomatoes will not turn red, but turn orange, and there will be a yellow-green circle next to the stalk.
2. If tomatoes, and this can happen even in a greenhouse, are exposed to direct sunlight, this may also be the cause of the problem in question. The fruit is simply baked in the sun and does not have enough time to ripen normally. With this problem, the area next to the stalk will be yellow.
3. Also, a sharp drop in temperature, humidity or even lighting can have a negative impact on the reddening of tomatoes.
4. Unevenly tomatoes in the greenhouse may ripen due to the fact that they grow too thick. Remember that the minimum distance between bushes is 30 centimeters. If you do not follow this seating scheme, then the fruits will be small or they will stop blushing.
5. If there is too much nitrogen in the soil and too little potassium, this will lead to an uneven color of the crop during ripening. In such a situation, the leaves will have a clear bronze tint, and the tomatoes will grow curved in shape. Fruits with such an imbalance of fertilizers in the soil will have voids inside, the stems of the bushes will be thin, and with a strong imbalance, the leaves of the plant will curl.
6. What can be done to make tomatoes blush faster in the greenhouse? First of all, identify the reason for this behavior of the plant. In addition to those already listed, one more factor should be noted - if a yellow speck appears on the stalk, this indicates that the tomatoes belong to a certain variety. That is, regardless of how many tomatoes are on the bush, they simply will not acquire a full and uniform color due to the peculiarities of the variety. Only hybrids will color evenly when matured in the greenhouse.
Maturation and factors influencing it
Honestly, only one fact is fundamental here - the variety of tomatoes. In the greenhouse, you can get a rich harvest if you grow the varieties "Orange", "Rose", "Sprut" (this is a tomato tree that can be up to four meters in height and yield up to one and a half tons per season).
What to do to make tomatoes blush faster in the greenhouse
Let's say the reason has been identified, but what to do next and what measures to take to speed up the ripening of tomatoes and help the plant as much as possible? In order for the tomatoes to get the maximum autumn sun, you will need to remove unnecessary leaves, and turn the tomato branches towards the sun's rays. This procedure is easiest to accomplish on a trellis.
Be sure to take this magic remedy. With them, your tomatoes will grow very quickly.
You can carry out additional feeding with iodine, because the lack of this element is also an important reason for the problem described. Spraying of plants is carried out, diluting 35 drops of iodine into ten liters of water.
Also, tomato bushes will need to be limited in nutrition. To do this, a through incision must be made in the stem at a height of 10 cm from the soil. Insert a piece of wood into the cut. It will ensure the outflow of nutrients. Be sure to pull the stem across to enhance the outflow effect, if required in each specific situation.
The gardener should remember that the regular removal of stepsons and lower leaves will help speed up the reddening of tomatoes in the greenhouse. You need to remove all new shoots and leaves from the bottom up to the brushes, on which the fruits ripen evenly. In the fall, it is imperative to carry out the prevention of late blight, for which spray the bushes with a solution of garlic.
Some gardeners set an example for other tomatoes. They take a ripe, beautiful fruit and put it next to unripe tomatoes. You will see that the method is effective and soon the tomato will start to turn red. The fact is that a ripe fruit releases ethylene, which is a catalyst for an unripe fruit to begin to blush. As a rule, a green fruit with this method turns red within literally three days.
Another option is to feed vegetables with alcohol. It is necessary to introduce 0.5 milliliters of vodka into the nest of a green tomato and observe an accelerated reddening, the fruit will ripen within a few weeks, and the chemical composition will be the same as a natural tomato.
What can I do to make tomatoes blush faster in the greenhouse? In this material, we give specific methods of what to do in such a strange, but not critical moment. But, before starting treatment, you need to understand: what exactly is the cause of delayed maturation.
If the tomato crop did not have time to ripen on the vine, you do not need to be upset. Some of the tomatoes can be used for processing, and the rest can be ripened, providing them with the appropriate conditions. Ripe tomatoes do not differ much in taste and useful properties from those that are ripe on the vine. Well, greenhouse tomatoes cannot be compared with them.
