Becoming the winner of the "Envy, Neighbor!" last year, and now I decided to try my hand at garden design, because the process of creativity and the creation of a garden continues, and I want to show people my flower beds.
It is not easy to create any flower garden so that it is beautiful and harmonious, so something is being transplanted all the time: either there is not enough color, or the shape of the leaves does not harmonize with the neighboring plant, then suddenly somewhere an empty space was formed after the flowering of the bulbous.
But the soul "sings", and any work brings only the joy of creativity.
The flower beds are arranged in such a way that weeding is done once a season - in June, later the plants close together and the weeds no longer grow. Once I do top dressing and autumn pruning of leaves. I plant bulbous plants (tulips, hyacinths) in pots immediately after flowering. I dig out the pots and put them in the shade until the next planting in the ground. Once every two years I change the soil in the pot. I plant annuals in place of the bulbous ones.
Arriving at the site, I first of all run to look at what has changed there in a week, what has blossomed and admire the beauty of the flower beds, and of course, there is a work plan right away - there is no need to rest at the dacha, although the change in activity is also a rest.
On vacation I leave more voluminous work (weaving hedges, digging a pond, etc.). At the end of the current vacation, the reservoir, which was going to be done for two years, was dug up. Now its registration is underway.
In general, the process of creativity and knowledge of the plant world continues. And the results can be seen by the readers on the photographs prepared for the competition.

Old furniture can be an excellent basis for the simplest wood organizer, it just needs to be supplemented with a few new details. So, our first product can be made on the basis of a wooden bench with a back. If there is no such thing in your farm, then it is not at all difficult to bring it down according to the drawings. Small items can be placed on the shelves; drawers can store what is undesirable to leave in the rain or sunlight.
On the same basis of a bench with a back, a model of a stand for garden tools was made, where it is placed in one row and in a strict order. To achieve this effect, you need to resort to a little trick. Pay attention to the upper horizontal bar on which the shafts of shovels, rakes and boots rest. Small pegs are nailed to it, which divide the entire bar into equal sections. Being between such strips inside the section, the handle will not heel and fall on its side, which means that each item will be easy for you to reach and just as easy to put in place. Nails are nailed to the lower wide bar so that you can easily hang garden shears, pruning shears, hacksaw and more on each. The beauty of such a shop is that you can either initially put it in the corner in which you are most often engaged in field work, or move it from place to place as needed or for decoration, new landscape design with your own hands. During departure or during the winter, the entire tool can be stored in a familiar shed.
By the way, inside the barn there is also a place for creativity, a new way of storing such things. Here is an example of how you can make a very original stand from pallets, an inexpensive and easy-to-use material, inside which the items you need will also be placed. Absolutely effortlessly, you can clean up your shed, getting rid of the problem of falling and getting tangled in inventory.
White is a fairly easily soiled shade and many summer residents deliberately avoid it in their decor, believing that it will not be so easy to maintain whiteness in suburban conditions. But if we are talking, as in this case, about wooden furniture, covered with high-quality white paint, with preliminary processing of wood, then care will be reduced to wiping the painted surface with a damp cloth as needed. All textiles that are needed to complete the look can be stored separately, or protected with covers that will be easy to machine wash. But against the backdrop of a green lawn or spreading tree branches, snow-white swings, hammocks or couches will look amazing.
We already know that it is possible to recycle unwanted items by decorating do-it-yourself garden and vegetable garden from bottles, cans, old pallets and boxes, used furniture, shoes and clothes. Considering crafts from tires for the garden and garden with our own hands, we could see what beautiful furniture sets can be made from a few simple tires. Now we invite you to see how you can make a garden set from metal barrels.
Each container must be cut with metal scissors so that after bending you will have a back on which you can lean. It is necessary to weld legs to each barrel or build a stand for them, thanks to which they will not rotate. For greater stability, you can pour any filler inside each container, among other things, this will allow you to put a wooden bench on top, which can be laid with a soft cloth for a more comfortable sitting on it, and also equipped with wooden sides.
As for the very last DIY kitchen garden and garden design ideas, photo which is located higher, then this original gazebo looks very impressive, and it is completely easy to make it, you just need to make an ordinary wooden box of four supports and boards, cover it with a roof, and cut original round holes in two walls, which will be both windows and entrance doors. The pallet corner sofa, which is located inside, only emphasizes the idea of a closed corner. It is convenient to use such a gazebo, placing it near the fence, or direct it with a closed part towards the road, neighbors. Then, being inside, you will feel alone and calm.
Acquaintance with the historical traditions of gardening from different countries will help not only broaden your horizons, but also draw interesting ideas that you can apply in your own garden.
One of the great ideas for gardeners who love gardening is planning a plot in the manner of a garden at the castle of Villandry in France. The castle itself is very old - it belongs to the Renaissance, namely, it was built in 1536. However, tourists are most often interested not so much in the architecture of the castle as in the magnificent garden, recreated anew at the beginning of the twentieth century.
Why is this garden so interesting and what ideas can you glean while walking around its large territory? And it is interesting because many vegetable and other horticultural crops are used on its territory.
In its style, it is a regular French garden with a strictly symmetrical layout. And on these symmetrical "beds" salads, ornamental cabbage and the like grow side by side with flowers. These makeshift beds, framed by sheared boxwood along the edge, form an elegant pattern when viewed from above, like a carpet flower bed.
Walking along the paths covered with gravel it does not even occur to you that you are walking in an exquisite vegetable garden - its "beds" are so decorative. This idea can be gleaned from the Villandry garden.
In the picture you can see the main idea of the layout of the site in a geometric style, with the conditional name "beautiful vegetable garden". The square area is designed strictly symmetrically, highlighting the center of the composition, where we will place the standard rose. Instead of a rose, there can be a decorative fountain, sculpture or vertical flower bed.
The essence of this layout is that vegetables will not be grown on ordinary beds, but on flower beds located between graceful paths and bordered by a low hedge.
By the way, this idea can be combined with the "raised bed" technology. The green border of the beds can also be neat bushes of greenery planted in a row - parsley, dill, basil. You can also make a border from carrots planted in one or two rows.
A row of apple trees resting on a trellis will be located along one side of the site. By the way, the idea for small plots - apple trees grown on a trellis take up almost no space, and you can get a very decent harvest from them.
From the side of the road, the plot is limited by a decorative low wooden fence.
Well, if you are closer to traditional beds, then read my following entries:
You can turn a country house into a picture from a glossy magazine on your own, without resorting to the services of expensive designers. To do this, you will need familiarity with the basics of landscape design, artistic taste, and unlimited imagination. The information presented in the article will help to plan the site and choose the appropriate style for decorating the adjoining space.
Before proceeding with the arrangement of the territory, you should pay attention to the laws that govern the design. The main requirement is a harmonious combination of elements, it doesn't matter whether it is a newly created composition or a composition remade to your taste.
The transformed landscape can be called successfully planned if the following norms are observed during the implementation of the idea:
When choosing a style from a variety of ready-made projects for decorating a country house, you should remember that not every one of them is easy to reproduce on your site. Match the natural lines of the landscape and existing structures that you do not plan to rebuild with what you want to see in the end.
When viewing successful samples from the photo gallery, choose a style for your own home that will bring less cost and effort, otherwise, instead of a planned vacation in the future, you will have to spend all your free time maintaining a stylish design.
Important! When organizing the landscape in a single style, remember that each zone should overlap with another, and the smooth outlines of paths and tree crowns — balanced by the rectangles of the buildings.
The discreet version of the classic is versatile and applicable to any sector. The landscape in this style is distinguished by graceful forms, clear boundaries and manifestations of symmetry. This style is characterized by the presence of neat rectangular lawns and zoned flower beds. It is possible to create bosquets from green spaces, that is, spheres, cylinders, ovals interconnected in appearance, forming geometric compositions from densely planted and decoratively trimmed bushes and trees.
The central part of the landscape can be a round reservoir or a fountain, around which straight paths of pebbles, gravel, asphalt radiate in straight rays. The addition will be benches, statues, outdoor flowerpots or arches. Conifers, catalpas, lindens, roses, lilacs, chubushnik will diversify the severity of forms.
If you are into the warm countryside theme and folk style, you should choose country with its naturally growing grass and unpretentious plants. The facade of the house, entwined with vines and ivy, exudes comfort. A wattle fence as a site fence will fit perfectly into the design. Artificially aged pots or rare earthenware vessels will adorn the simplicity of the style.
A clumsy scarecrow, a wooden wheel, a mill or a flower bed, decorated in the form of a cart with simple but catchy flowers such as mallows, nasturtiums, sunflowers, will add zest to the decor. Fruit trees will also be of practical importance, and shrubs planted in wooden tubs set off deliberate primitivism.
This discreet look assumes a wide area, as dense plantings of tall trees, ornamental shrubs and the size of areas with lawn grass will require enough space. Symmetry is optional here: plants are planted in several tiers, shrubs alternate with mowed lawns. It is good if the terrain of the site is hilly, and the paths are winding and uneven. Often there is a hedge of small bushes along paths lined with stone or brick chips. Variegated varieties of shrubs are also planted near the house, and beautiful flower beds in bloom perfectly complement the composition.
Important! If the territory is small, a multi-tiered arrangement of flowerpots will save space for plants and simplify flower care.
Ivy arches are an integral part of the landscape style. The design of an English garden may include stylized ruins, large statues and irregular natural bodies of water that should not accentuate attention, so large objects, including a house, are hidden behind trees.
The water source can be created artificially, but in this case it must retain its natural appearance. They decorate the water with tall trees planted around the pond, near-water plants, create a sandy descent to the water to preserve the natural look.
The Provencal style is able to recreate the romantic atmosphere of French pastorals in any area. It is characterized by the absence of pronounced lines and borders, the use of delicate tones of white, salad and azure shades in the decoration of buildings and arbors.Discreet small flowers and lavender scent on a natural lawn transform the untidiness of uncut grass into thoughtful natural beauty. Ivy, hops, grapes look good on a light low fence. Preserving the design of a tree or a cut of stone during finishing will help decorate the paths without disturbing the overall style.
The trend that came to design from Japan implies adherence to the principles of the philosophy of the unity of nature and man. A landscape created for meditation, along with spiritual harmony, should bring physical relaxation. Japanese gardens are dominated by decorative structures, sculptures, paths made of stones, and fountains or miniature ponds with decorative bridges and lanterns.
In the flower garden, use calm pink or white shades of undersized irises and dwarf plants. Low trees, sakura, felt cherry or bonsai formed from thuja or azalea will complement the oriental flavor.
Smoothness, originality and roundness are the main characteristics that reflect the essence of modernity. Abstract, unusual figures of buildings and sculptures, modern glossy and matte construction and decorative materials distinguish this look from the rest.
Important! A strong slope of the soil can be beaten with the help of decorative retaining walls to create an alpine slide from natural stones or make a multi-level composition with a pond in the lowland.
The main place from which you need to build on when designing a garden is the house. It is from him that paths will diverge as rays and smooth lines of lawns will form around. Reproduction of the lines of a facade or a tree can be repeated in other elements, a winding floral ornament, the introduction of uncharacteristic forms without right angles will be reflected in the creation of non-standard spiral and arched paths, flower beds, a pond.
Create a roundness in the rest of the decor elements, for example, fancy forging patterns that repeat the shape of a climbing plant are appropriate. Laconic garden furniture is suitable for this style. Traditionally, large trees are planted for this style - these can be willow, birch, ash, oak alone or in a small group. They combine the fantasy curves of pines with dwarf forms of fruit trees, lianas and bright annuals.
Natural motives and beauty reign in a lush garden that combines the principles of feng shui and the symbolism of the Chinese color combination. Design involves placing elements in accordance with the doctrine of what each side of the world carries. In the color preferences of the Chinese, red, which generously brings wealth, success, fame, is therefore welcomed in different shades both in flowering and in the color of foliage.
The central pond will be a pond that can be populated with goldfish and a lotus can be planted in it, and a bamboo bridge will become a decorative but significant element in the style. Not far away there is a gazebo, made in the form of a traditional pagoda - with a curved roof in 2-3 tiers. Place the trees so that they do not hide the main components of the Chinese style. Low-growing willows, peaches and plums are suitable.
The high functionality of the no-nonsense high-tech style quickly brought it to popularity. The simple harmony of the original things brought convenience in general care. The criteria for the size of the site are not important here - both narrow stripes and large rectangles of land near the house will fit. There are no obstacles to its creation and in the complexity of the original relief: zoning in this case assumes both symmetry and asymmetry, using combinations of concrete, plastic, glass and stones.
Light shades prevail in this direction: white, gray, beige, light lilac, gold and lilac strokes. An accent is appropriate with the participation of orange, red, blue or black, while trying not to overload the overall view of the landscape with catchy details. The finished look, with smooth, austere paved paths and geometrically regular lawns, is distinguished by calm integrity without prominent bright details, flower beds, or wooden objects. All forms should be concise and simple.
The proximity to the park style allows the presence of unusual crowns of rowan trees and larch trees in high-tech, but it is better to do with extended lines of discreet shrubs of spirea, barberry, and snowberry. Silver, yellow, purple varieties of trees and conifers will help to add liveliness. A play with lighting, benches and concrete flower containers make the recreation areas stand out.
In order to create unique landscape design objects on your own and bring individuality to them, you will need patience, availability of materials, readiness for novelty and hard work. Do not be afraid to take the initiative and deviate from the canons - extraordinary solutions sometimes reveal the not obvious beauty of the territory and create an unforgettable atmosphere.
Decide on the choice of style, place and amount of work, remember that independent arrangement of the site in a short period is a myth. This process is endless, because plants require fertilization, watering, shearing, preparation for wintering. But if you come up with a soul and do the job efficiently, your site will take on a neat and attractive look in any season.
Before starting work, it is necessary to plan their sequence, arranging the items in descending order of importance:
Such a plan is not a literal guide to execution: it will have to be adjusted several times, but visualization is important for understanding step-by-step actions while maintaining a single style.
The layout of the zones depends on the conditions of a particular area and your idea of the illumination of various parts of the local area. But the division of the site implies the mandatory presence of a functional area.
Its definition includes:
Landscaping is an integral part of landscape design, in addition, tracts of grass are needed to reduce dust and moisture. Lawns can be presented in different versions within the same style, based on their purpose for different zones:
To grow succulent lawn grass yourself, follow these guidelines:
Internal geometry is formed using backyard paths. They should be wide enough to accommodate two people and easy to move between areas of the site. With the right materials, connecting links can be a work of art.
The tips below will help you arrange your tracks correctly:
So that the reservoir does not get out of the general style, it is necessary to correctly plan and correctly calculate a convenient location. Usually it is located on the sunny side, but so that you can hide nearby under the canopy of trees or in a shaded gazebo. There are many ready-made forms, but when choosing or creating them yourself, take into account the proper semantic load and the need for common elements for a single landscape design.
Choose suitable types of water sources for placement:
There are a huge variety of materials to delineate the boundaries of a site of any size. Choose an acceptable option for the fence, not only for aesthetic reasons, but also based on cost, durability, comfort:
When arranging flower beds, take care of the color palette, which should not be out of the general range. Some styles of landscape design imply only one or two tones, others allow for a variety of colors, but do not use more than five, otherwise clumsy can not be avoided.
Plants should be planted in such a way that some bloom is replaced by others. Often in the classical and English styles, a monochrome canvas of conifers is used in the background of flower beds, well shading flowering plants.
Did you know? A monochromatic design option will help to avoid color overload. The combination of all kinds of shades from one range completes the simplest design.
Consider the characteristics of the soil and ease of care when planting perennials. With a high level of groundwater, drainage ditches will be needed for arranging flower beds.
Now the most popular are four ways of placing flower beds:
Many landscape designers use a set of tricks to create a complete composition of a general plan when planting trees and shrubs, allowing to change the perception of green spaces:
In order to get the opportunity to retire, a gazebo, pergola or terrace must be present in the recreation area. Consider the following features when placing them:
Garden design, contrary to popular belief about the exclusivity of professional landscape projects, can be done with your own hands. Unique colorful landscapes that fully match your taste, needs and habits, ideally fit into the size and natural relief of the site, surprise and conquer in a harmonious way - this is not a dream, but a reality.
True, it will take a lot of effort to create a functional and decorative garden. After all, you will have to think over all the important and mandatory steps from assessing the features of the site to placing the last decorative accent on your own.
The quality of the result, the attractiveness and completeness of the appearance of your garden depend on how competently and responsibly you treat its design. And it is not at all reduced to planting the brightest plants in flower beds. Any landscape design is based on planning and design.
Before thinking about the appearance of the future garden, you must assess (including using geodetic analysis) all the original features of the site - from soil characteristics, water level, elevation differences and existing objects to a panorama. Only after such an assessment can you create a landscape that takes into account all the specifics of the site, convenient and functional.
Landscape design is based on the choice of style and artistic design concept. Based on your tastes and preferences, sensibly assessing your capabilities and the specifics of climatic conditions, decide on the style or trend of garden design in which you will equip the garden.
There are an incredible variety of styles: classic and strict, landscape, imitating wild nature and romantic trends have their own laws and rules, mandatory elements that must be present in the design of the garden. Among the most popular today are English, French regular, Mediterranean, Scandinavian, romantic, country style, hi-tech, modern, minimalism, etc.
Having determined what needs to be changed, improved, and what should be left, proceed to the sketch - drawing up several variations of the garden layout, including:
Having chosen the option you like the most, on its basis, develop a master plan, a planting plan and plans for the arrangement of individual complex objects. Only when they are ready, and the selection of all plants and the calculation of materials are completed, you can begin to translate your dreams into practice.
The arrangement of the garden begins with the laying of communications - lighting, drainage system, water supply. Then they start paving and decorating all areas and paths - from hard pavements made of natural stone or its artificial substitutes to soft pavements made of gravel and stepping paths, they establish forms of small architecture and form boundaries.
Only after all the "hard" design elements are ready, do the most interesting and responsible thing - planting plants.
Landscape designers in Western Europe are creative people. However, residents of villages and cities with private houses try not to contact them. They carry out all the design work on the landscaping of their plots themselves.
Let's take a look at a few private properties whose owners have allowed their individual craftsmanship to be photographed for readers and gardeners from other countries.
So, we are in the German village of Westheim, located a few kilometers from the French border. The appearance of the streets, front gardens and gardens suggests that there are economic and very tidy people living in this settlement.
While walking along the local streets with a portable camera, several housewives asked me why I was taking photographs? Upon learning that the photographs would be published on a site dedicated to the maintenance of a home garden, the residents of Westheim volunteered to accompany me through the village, explaining to the neighbors for what purpose the photo session was being held.
The average German village is diametrically different from our cottage towns in its openness. Here you will not see tall stone or iron fences with iron gates on which a warning sign will hang: "Caution, there is an angry dog in the yard!"
Here it is, European openness and complete trust in strangers who can turn to the owners for help at any time.
Near the facades of low plastered wooden or brick country houses, there are many rose bushes, undersized magnolia trees, vine bushes and other vegetation planted in the ground.
Often in the front gardens there are coniferous trees and bushes, interspersed with lavender thickets. These plant compositions are reminiscent of the mountain slopes of the nearby Black Forest.
Since my photo was taken on a Saturday afternoon, many of the homeowners were not there. But others were happy to meet a foreign guest.
Climbing the steep steps lined with flower pots along the edges, passing through the house, we found ourselves in a garden pavilion. Here I came across an amazing sculpture of a plaster frog, sprawled on artificial grass in a wicker basket.
Going down the steps, surrounded by lush greenery, we found ourselves in a small but cozy garden, where everything is thought out to the smallest detail.
The paths near the house and the grill area are covered with the most common gravel. This building material is much cheaper here than concrete or asphalt. Instead of a bench by a huge metal brazier with legs, where a fire was being made, there was a tree trunk of an intricate shape. It was very pleasant to sit on it.
The owners have placed flower pots along the edges of the playground, creating additional comfort here.
In the middle of the garden there is an incomprehensible structure made of wood. This is a "children's house". There are many such log-board structures in Germany. People build them for their young children. At a height of 1.5 - 2 meters from the ground there is a small living room where boys and girls spend the night in the warm season or play with friends.
Usually, bearing wooden poles, on which the "headquarters" for sons and daughters is located, are covered with ivy or other climbing vegetation, and a place for rest is located under the shed.
The green lawn of the garden is equipped with the most common concrete blocks. When guests gather, seating cushions are placed on them and the issue of an additional set of garden furniture is solved in this way.
An old wicker basket looked very original, which the owners were sorry to throw away. So it was adapted for a portable flower pot.
To collect rainwater and water the garden under a storm drain, the owner built an original reservoir, which is equipped with an amazing drain. In rainy weather, jets of a mini-waterfall gush from a colorfully decorated reservoir, the foot of which is decorated with small granite boulders and pots with a fern flower.
This summer I was allowed to visit such a German garden with a camera.
